For me, it's been a balancing act - working on interesting content, being in the chatrooms making friends, being consistent. To a lesser degree, commenting on other's posts and greeting newcomers (I'm pretty new myself!) I think taking a diversified approach helps.

I agree...there's a lot to get your head round at first and concentrating on any one of those things can be time consuming so definitely a balancing act! keep up the good work :)
Eventually, though, I imagine it will be as smooth as being on facebook or twitter... :)
