The Importance of Confidence: My Story

Hi Steemians, I wanted to share with you my opinions on confidence and how the effects of both having little and having lots can make a big difference in your life.

My name is David and I've been running my own football academy for children for 2 years now. I started with 8 children and now have 101 that attend my sessions on a weekly basis. I've also had one of my players sign for West Ham Utd and currently have 2 others training with professional clubs.

The name of my academy is Kekoa Coaching.
Kekoa means "Strong fearless one" and this embodies everything that I believe a footballer should be and how it should be played. "Creativity Takes Courage" is my slogan and I believe that confidence is at the centre of it all.

Football has always been my passion ever since I can remember, and I could always been seen with a ball at my feet around my local area. I spent hours with a ball a day and I couldn't imagine doing anything else, when I got older.

I was good, some would say excellent and to this day, people always ask me how didn't I make it as a professional player and I use to ask myself that question all of the time. On reflection I now see that confidence played a very important part of my playing career.

I always felt comfortable whenever I played with friends and at school. I really showed my full capabilities I enjoyed playing and never felt afraid to try a new trick that I had taught myself.

My issue was when I played out of my comfort zone. My confidence was very low, and I now realise that there were three main reasons for this:

The first reason, which until recently I've accepted is the lack of support I had. My parents have never seen me play football ever, and I see how much of a lift having a parent or family member with you makes such a difference when your a young player.

The second was that I was afraid to make a mistake, so as a result I never played my natural game or really showed my true abilities.

The third was, I was willing to accept anything. I would never speak up or have a opinion even if I disagreed with what was said.

These three main things contributed greatly to my football career and even tho I managed to play for Chelsea, Leyton Orient and Stevenage throughout my playing days, I know that I had more to offer.

My aim now is to install confidence into young football players and help them to be the very best that they can both on and off the pitch my becoming confident and believing in themselves.

That's why I created Kekoa Coaching

Inspiring post

Great post!

While I don't really like football, I really enjoyed reading your story and learning more about confidence.

I also suffered from this multiple times, and I lost many many opportunities because I did not believe in myself. It may also be because no one in my family believed in me, and everyone said I should learn how to do something else, not related to computers.

Anyway, great article, really motivational story. Best of luck! :)

Keep up the good work!

Fake it till you make it.. if you really think about this statement its more aptly correct if you rephrase it as " Act as if" act as if you are the best, why ? because when you embody that persona your mind and body will fall into unison. confidence is king, great post.

I completely agree about the importance of confidence. If you don't believe you can succeed, you might as well quit. I agree it sounds harsh, but there are so many aspects an athlete needs to be prepared for prior to taking the field, if part of their mental preparation is being hampered by doubt, they're already at a disadvantage. Also, attempting to play with a lack of confidence also gives the player a reason for not giving their full effort, which not only sets just themselves back but it sets the team back as well. I understand the negative stigma around being cocky, but you have to at least be confident!

Anyway, good post!

The children are very lucky to have you as their coach :)

thank you for sharing this! A lot people struggle with confidence and getting out of their comfort zones... I personally went through this process and even though it is a tough one, you only grow as a person and serve as a tool to help other! you're inspiring!

i totally agree with this. i think that confidence is vital to live a complete life.

Im sure we have all had moments where we didn't have the confidence to do what we wanted, or say what we wanted. those are the times where its the most important. if i think back to my school days, i would have had such a more enjoyable time. but because i was a shy kid. i never really got the full experience. i know i missed out on alot of stuff just because i didnt have the balls to put myself out there and try. Even had i failed i would have learned something from it, instead now i just look back and wonder what could have come out of it?

maybe had i signed up for the table tennis team i would have been really good, i might have made some new friends that could have turned out to be friends for life, but now i will never have known them. so many more missed opportunities.

The movie "yes man" is a really great example, and its not exaggerated hollywood crap at all. Putting yourself out of your comfort zone and doing things does lead to what is portrayed in the movies, even if its just you learning something small, its important.

Really good story, and looks like a really good academy.....seems the hard work is paying of for you and its such a great thing you are doing

These kids need the oppurtunity to develop there own confidence and take it forward into a sport like football

I run my own kids team here in scotland and giving them the freedom to go out and play will develop them in not just football skills but learn great life skills

Keep up the good work
