I am here because I was introduced and encouraged by friends, to be a part of this great community. I hope to learn so much from this place as I noticed the quality of the information here is almost out of this world.
In learning from you good people, I shall try as much as possible not to let you guys down by following in your footsteps (which is hard because you all are smart, exceptional people).
I am an unconventional Electrical engineer with a bias towards Power system and machines, and you must forgive if I am not so good with words as to impress the quality minds here. We thrive more in analysis and computations, hence my apology.
Being an unconventional engineer in this diverse economy as is obtainable here in Nigeria is not so easy, as a result, I have to diversify too. I am also a seasoned farmer but neither can you describe me as a seasonal farmer. I toil throughout the seasons of the year while praying for a better tomorrow.
I specialise in poultry farming. I rear broilers, pullets and turkey. I prefer free range poultry farming because it is close to organic. But then it leaves you with little control as opposed to battery cage system which confines the birds to the cages. Isolating these birds to their respective cages gives a level of power to the owner especially when you are not physically present on your farm always.
When the birds roam, it is difficult to establish when there is a theft or when there are unreported deaths. And when there is disease outbreak it might be difficult for you to cull (a situation when you have to isolate the sickly birds). In such case, one has to resort to the overall treatment of the flock which is not economical.
But with a battery cage system which is isolative and restrictive at the same time with the added disadvantage of not being strictly organic, spotting of unproductive or sickly birds becomes easy as in the case of laying birds. In such case, culling becomes easy which will further maximise your profit because overall treatment of the flock will be averted while savings in feed would result in optimum profitability.
I won’t bore you good people with my poultry experience because you will not believe some of the things I've seen.
I am also a shopkeeper in some remote village that even Google would miss. Shopkeeping is more comfortable as opposed to poultry because you do not have to feed your goods. But in poultry keeping, the birds must eat even if they are not productive. I am not trying to say that shopkeeping is less tasking because it depends on whether you stock perishable goods or not. Stuff like bread loses its freshness over time. In that case, one must only shelf the minimum number you can sell based on experience or an ongoing trend.
I can comfortably class myself as an entrepreneur because I have been able to solve the problem of scarcity of eggs and chicken within my locality.
Since I am the one that trains my staff in the poultry, I am still wondering if I could believe I am a teacher albeit a small-time teacher.
At this juncture, I would like to thank you all for adopting me as your own while I strive hard to understand and represent this great community well.
