People shouldn't think about getting paid too much but the other benefits of steem like decentralization (which prevents censorship) to name just one.

At first you should follow some people (writing about things you're interested in) and try to get followers by commenting/replying.
There are a lot of posts for newbies here, search for steemit tutorials/newbies etc.
Don't forget to check the QuickStartGuide and the FAQ..

Great to see another photography enthusiast. Convincing people how great Steemit is did not work for me, for the same reasons you add here. Give it some time, it will soon go mainstream is my guess. Enjoy the ride here :-)

Personally I use bitcoin as an example... I show how all the skeptics did not believe.... it's also more than just money.... this is also about decentralizing social media... Steem puts control in the communities hands instead of Facebook... and instead of facebook getting paid for that value we do the owners of Steem... we all own it!!!

Welcome aboard. The best way to convince your friends to get on board with Steemit is to ask them to view this as an experiment. Maybe it will be the next bitcoin 💰 or maybe the Steem economy will collapse. 💸 No matter the outcome we'll have fun an meet nice people while trying to make it work. 😁
