Welcome to Steemit! Ay, the waiting time to get in is definitely an issue. They are looking into a few different ways of trying resolving that. One of the might even be letting the user mine to cover the cost of the accounts creation.

According to the numbers I have seen so far they are still doing pretty well with regards to growth. 10K new accounts in 5 days is definitely something.
I'm in now and these 0.007 BTC I spent on Anonsteem were definitely worth it (: In the end I just didn't want to wait any longer.
