I'm Daniel, a vagabond painter

Plein air self portrait - Oil on board 8x12"

Hello Steem community! My name is Daniel, I'm a vagabonding oil painter. A few weeks ago I was in Sintra in Portugal, setting up a little street gallery to sell some of my artwork, when the scabies-ridden steemit-promotion-hobo @shla-rafia sat down next to me asking me for a lighter for his big joint. I had never heard about steemit before, but some hours and some grams later I knew a big lot more about, steemit, cryptocurrencies, the blockchain and those rich fucks who always vote on the wrong stuff. So, now I made an account.

I'm living out of a backpack (I will probably make a post about my lightweight oilpainting kit soon), moving mainly by hitchhiking and sleeping outside or with friends, family or hosts. I do this because I have the drive to find new places and people to paint, and to get to know. I try to sell my Paintings on the street like in the photo above, which sometimes works good, sometimes not so much, depending on place and season. To augment this I am looking more into selling online in the future. I also draw quick ink portraits of people for money, which is a lot of fun but also super exhausing.

gotta keep that back straight

I paint exclusively from life, which in my opinion is the only way to make good realistic paintings. Photos lack the immediacy, the range of contrast and the focus, that I like about direct painting. Painting from live for me is a very intimate way of connecting to the nature and people that I encounter. It forces me to be in the moment, slow down, taking a close and precise look at what surrounds me and allows me to share and express my sensual appreciation of this visual world we live in.

I paint figuratively/realisticly because for me our visual world, the world made up by light bouncing around, is an essential part of the universal human experience. I see realistic painting as a universal language that can be understood, or rather felt, by anyone regardless of cultural background, concepts, education or status. Right now I don't think or conceptualize much about my subjects. I just look for something that visually interests me, a light situation for example. My focus lies in deepening my understanding of this visual language, studying, trying to extend my technical abilities, not with the illusion that there will be an end to learning, but to build a strong foundation for my future work. Im painting quite small at the moment, but in the future, when I get faster and more firm in my technique I want to work on bigger canvases. My all time favourite painter and inspiration is Joaquin Sorolla who painted enormous light filled canvases directly from life.

I will be posting works on steemit, but am also planning to do blogposts about travelling, busking, painting equipment etc. I also want to start filming timelapses of me painting and later getting into making painting tutorials, as I'd love to share what I'm learning. I'm interested in meeting other painters on this platform and to exchange skills and experiences.

Thats it, now I'll leave you with some photos and paintings!

Nice post 😊 you are awesome by doing the street gallery and portraits for people on the street. Thats what I was thinking to do long time ago, but somehow I got caught up with other things. Your artworks are wonderful, and Im glad to see your passion positivity and enthusiasm behind it. If you end up in Auckland New Zealand on your travels contact me. Welcome to the steemit community and wish you happy painting & steeming. 😊👍🖌🎨

thanks a lot! New Zealand is an awesome place, I was there many many years ago, at a time when i didn't paint. Would love to visit again one day, as the diverse landscape is perfect to paint. If I'll ever come, I'll let you know, thanks a lot for the offer.

thanks a lot nick!

Beautiful work! Welcome! I'm excited to see what you share! I have been thinking of trying oils again after a failed attempt back in art school... I will watch you and learn! Cheers!

thank you for the warm welcome! I love oils. I tried them kind of late, just about 3 years ago. Before I painted in watercolour and acrylics. I fell in love immediatly because theyre so nice to control and stay workable unlike acrylics. Try them again. And don't get scared by solvents etc. There are odourless solvents, ways to paint without any solvents and also water-soluble oil paints which are actually quite good. Cheers!

Wonderful! Thanks for the info! I will look into it!

Dear Daniel,
welcome to Steemit! Your work is beautiful! I can't wait to see more!
It seems to me we have both joined a unique platform where everyone helps each other out.
You will be one of the first people I follow around here!

hey! welcome! excited to learn from you. :)

Welcome and great intro post, I'm an artist as well and I host a contest every week. I look forward to seeing what you post!

Welcome Daniel, you're very talented artist, enjoy steemit and make yourself at home. I upvoted and follow, waiting for your next posts about art.

Btw, whe share our first name, my name is also Daniel :-)

Good stuff. It sounds like an interesting journey. Welcome to Steemit. I'm an artist as well but never really been a paint on the fly type of person. Painting just still seems like a lot of prep work to post up and paint live then break down all my gear. So I would like to hear about your light mobile painting kit. I'm following for more.

Welcome. beautiful artworks. :D

Awesome pics! :)

Hello and welcome! I love your paintings ❤️

i like your article. and i already folow you. if you have time visit my bog @ yulissari

Very nice post and love your work, always like people who keep travelling and never stay on one place.

Your work is great. What a great way to be an artist, traveling and free. Some time laps videos and tutorials would be great, I know they are probably not easy but seeing the process of how people create their work is so awesome to see. The beach paintings are very good.

you are a romantic! reminds me of my time decades ago when I sat on the pavement in Gamla Stan Stockholm, drawing.
Resteemed and upvoted - following you.

Welcome to Steemit! This is amazing work. The contrast of light/dark on your first portrait is really beautiful.

I just found you on another post and so glad I did. I love that you still embrace plein air painting. Where I live on the coast in Eastern USA it is quite popular to do so round here in the Summer. I also LOVE The story of how you came to be on steemit, that is so great. It really shows how real life moments can still bring us together in the digital world as well. I am an artist also, I used to be a printmaker and oil painting exclusively, but moved digitally a while back due to the ease of not needing studio space every time I travel. I am now a follower and look forward to your work. Welcome!

i'm in love with your paintings!!! <3 <3 <3

Very good post, its a joy to look at your paintings!...

Great work, I love oil! Hope to see more of your work. Followed :)
