Comparing my experience from the States and Canada, it really is change of pace. I am staying in Lima for the time being, the weather is mostly grey until summer; which starts at the end of the year. It can get expensive, but from what I hear it is worth it. The rural areas are very beautiful especially Cusco. Very tourist friendly, I would recommend going there for your first time. It's safe and you have plenty to do.
