Fields of interest and research achievements:
The main field of interest of Prof. Milosav Ž. Čarkić, PhD, is research into the poetic language of Serbian poetry. Of special interest are his efforts to identify the poetic code of Serbian poetry, and poetry in general. The most prominent in that regard is his phono-stylistic and stylistic research of poetic language, within which Prof. Čarkić has contributed to the methodology and introduced many new terms, thus rounding off this field of research. By understanding and using these achievements, every researcher can now embark on analysing poetic language and poetry in general much more easily. Apart from that, Prof. Čarkić has been studying rhyme, and has formulated his own theory, accompanied by the corresponding methodology and terminology. It should be noted that Čarkić has introduced into the field of rhyme over 80 new terms, and has challenged some old ones, such as feminine, masculine, dactylic, pure, impure rhyme, introducing his own terms, such as monophonemic, biphonemic, triphonemic, tetraphonemic rhyme, etc., as well as isomorphic, metathetic, epenthetic and metathetic-epenthetic rhyme, covering all the quantitative and qualitative forms of rhyme.
Dealing with rhyme in the Serbian epic decasyllable, unlike all the other scholars so far, both local and foreign (including Roman Jakobson), he has shown that this type of verse rhymes. Generally speaking, all research by Čarkić is characterized by an original scholarly approach at the highest level of theory and application. His works are written with scientific accuracy, methodological clarity and originality. His analyses are always based on extensive material, drawing on diverse sources, and accompanied by an exhaustive review of critically interpreted relevant theoretical assumptions with regard to his own investigations. Each analysis conducted by Čarkić leads to a detection of new facts and to original conclusions. All this has been stated by reviewers of his published studies. As an example, we shall quote the few final sentences from the Review by Prof. Ivo Pospíšil, PhD (Masaryk University of Brno, the Czech Republic) of Čarkić’s study Verse and Language: “Čarkić’s phenomenal book represents an array of textual analyses trying to synthetize the linguistic, poetological, stylistic, comparative, semiological and philosophical conception of the language of verse as a key to a more detailed and elaborate understanding of poetry as a means of grasping the totality of human existence […] I would even say that the theory of the verse language might be divided as ‘before and after Čarkić’: his knowledge of literary style enabled him to demonstrate that the literary and linguistic studies form one continuous space. In the context of contemporary verse research Čarkić’s book represents a book of supreme quality. His perfect knowledge of poetry in general and Serbian poetry in particular confirm him one of the leading world experts in verse investigation.”
We shall also quote a few final sentences from the Review of Čarkić’s study Models of Rhyme (2017) by Prof. Andrej Stojanović (Belgrade University): “Generally speaking, the monograph Models of Rhyme by M. Ž. Čarkić represents an original scholarly work which fundamentally alters scientific perception in this field of poetic language, thus calling into question the existing definitions of rhyme, its beginning and end, its classification (both quantitative and qualitative), its terms, which are largely metaphorical (masculine, feminine, children’s, rich, poor, pure, dirty), its (in)correctness (monosyllabic, disyllabic, trisyllabic etc.). The monograph was written in a simple and easily comprehensible style, which leads to the conclusion that the author’s mind was totally clear when he established his theory and classification of rhyme. In order to demonstrate the validity of his theoretical and terminological solutions, Čarkić chose for the subject of his research ten representative world poetries: American, English, Czech, French, Italian, German, Polish, Russian, Serbian and Spanish. […] The publishing of this study would enable the local and global scholars to get acquainted with original solutions by the author, but also with centuries-old fallacies that have dominated this specific scholarly discipline.”
So much for the beginning, greetings and thanks to everyone for a visit, I hope we will have a good time together.
