Introducing @biodiversity, a blog about endangered and endemic species of the Bamenda Highlands Forests and the World

Green greetings steemians! This is your flora and fauna species information blog, @biodiversity.

@biodiversity is a program of @thegreens and the purpose of this blog is to raise awareness about the different endangered and endemic species in the Bamenda Highlands Forests and around the world that are at the brink of extinction as a result of humanity’s actions; as well as to inspire you to take action to protect the species. Besides raising awareness and calling to action, @biodiversity strives to raise funds to create a Biodiversity Mobile App that will be used by people worldwide to learn about species, species extinctions and what they can do to stop species extinction.

The program works in partnership with @treeplanter which is a tree planting bot of @Kedjom-Keku, that you can use to plant trees in the Bamenda Highlands Forests, hence contribute in biodiversity conservation and the fight against species extinction.

But, How many species are we losing?

Well... this is the million dollar question and one that’s very hard to answer.
Surprisingly, we don’t know exactly what’s out there and It’s a big complex world where new species are discovered all the time.

"Scientists were startled in 1980 by the discovery of a tremendous diversity of insects in tropical forests. In one study of just 19 trees in Panama, 80% of the 1,200 beetle species discovered were previously unknown to science... Surprisingly, scientists have a better understanding of how many stars there are in the galaxy than how many species there are on Earth." - World Resources Institute (WRI).

So, if we don’t know how much there is to begin with, we don’t know exactly how much we’re losing.
According to WWF, species extinction are rapidly accelerating at a 1000 to 10000 times higher than natural extinction rate. It's frightening but true: Our planet is now in the midst of its sixth mass extinction of plants and animals and we're currently experiencing the worst spate of species die-offs since the loss of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. The bad news is that this is happening under our watchful eyes and the impacts of species extinction are already hunting us BUT the good news is that we can do something about it and this explains why @biodiversity has been created on Steemit.

With @biodiversity, you will learn about the different species out there, the role they play in the ecosystem, and what you can do to protect species from becoming extinct.
