Hello Steemit! My name is Sam Capener. I am 19 years old and just graduated from high school in 2015. I first became interested in Bitcoin back in March of 2013 and I've been following the cryptocurrency and blockchain community with fascination ever since. I'm extremely excited about Steemit. I think it is an early example about what the blockchain can really do and how it will shape our future.
Most of my peers are going through college but I decided a long time ago that it wasn't the path for me. This would make a great topic for a post actually, but for now let's just say the idea of being a couple hundred thousand dollars in debt is very unappealing to me. Instead I've been working two jobs, trying to save enough money to start my life out on my own.
One of those jobs is at a liquor store, but I've been very fortunate to get a job in New York City at a watch company called Patek Philippe. It is a small, Swiss based company that sells the most expensive and prestigious watches in the world. Working there is a great experience, where workmanship and professionalism are highly valued and I've learned a lot. I get to see and work with the most beautiful handcrafted timepieces. I first started interning three summers ago because my dad works as a watchmaker for the company, and I now fill in whenever they need the extra help (currently one or two days a week).
The celestial, my favorite watch. The stars turn in time with the night sky while the moon rotates around the dial and changes phases. Completely handmade and runs accurately without batteries. An absolutely beautiful item to see in person. Image taken from the Patek Philippe website.
I have a strong interest in entrepreneurship, especially in a way where I can work independently for myself. I am very excited about OpenBazaar for example, and I plan to open my own shop selling homemade jams in the near future. More than that I want to be able to support myself through writing. I am very much still developing and learning as a writer and I am trying to develop my skills at fiction and short stories, both of which I plan to publish here. I also write poetry because it's fun and it keeps me in the habit of writing, so I will post short collections of them from time to time.
I will also be posting nonfiction pieces of any topic that I decide to delve into. I have an interest in economic and political topics from the Voluntaryist and Austrian school perspectives. My love for free markets was a main motivation for getting into Bitcoin and Steemit. Instead of writing arguments tearing down opposing views I want to present uplifting celebrations of the market and human freedom, and my first post will be in this category. However I don't want these topics to be the main focus of my blog as nowadays I find politics to be mostly boring and pointless.
There is much more to celebrate about life, and I hope to capture some of the worlds wonder in all forms of my writing. Above all I want to bring a little bit of beauty into peoples lives, and I believe writing to be one of the most powerful ways of presenting the beautiful to someone.
Have a great day, and keep on writing. :)
Sam
I took this picture yesterday outside my work. This image doesn't come close to doing it justice, but it was such a beautiful sight that I had to share.
welcome to the community. Coffee and doughnuts are in the back! If you want to follow me or people with similar interests it will activate your feed feature! Happy steemin'
Thank you :)
Congrats on actually saving and not following the herd into college.
Nice to have you! I'm also really interested in OpenBazaar. I'll be on the lookout for your future posts :)
Thank you! If I open shop I'll post about it here!
Hi Sam, welcome to Steemit. That is one impressive-ass watch. I thought I'd check the price, thinking it would be maybe $1k, $5k, $10k... it's actually $400k. I guess I won't be buying one any time soon.
Welcome again and have a great day
Thank you. Not only that, you have to apply for it. Meaning you have to already own a few of their pricey watches and you still might get rejected.
Nice to meet you dude. Just don't get married bro!
