Things That Hold Back Creativity

If you want to become more creative, first have a good think if any of these barriers are applicable to you and your life. There are many reasons why people can’t become more creative and I will list a few them below.

What Holds Back Creativity?

• Lack of time. While the creative process for different activities takes a lot of time, coming up with the creative ideas does not take a lot of time. You can be inspired any time, anywhere for creative ideas. If you’re bored at work, for instance, let your creative imagination take you away.

• Fear of being judged. Creativity means being different. With being different comes the fear of being judged or ridiculed. You should never feel afraid to express your creative ideas. Being different is good. Why would you want to be normal and boring like everyone else?

• Lack of self-esteem. When you’re different from everyone else, it can make you feel very uncomfortable. If you have a creative idea, you should share it anyways! Next time you feel uncomfortable when you’re creative, ignore the feeling and just push through.

• Fear of failure. This is probably the biggest reason why we don’t want to be creative. If you have a new idea for your business and you’re afraid of trying it, you have to realize you’ll never know if it will be successful if you don’t put it into action. As I’ve pointed out in previous articles, failure is necessary for success!

Creativity Is Not Just For Geniuses

Creativity can really happen for anyone. It doesn’t need to be reserved for geniuses only. Even if you think you are not a creative person, you are. Did you know that you are dreaming every single night, even if you do not remember your dreams?

Turn the Negatives into a Positive

Any time if you feel like you can’t be creative, just think back on the reasons I mentioned above and think of a positive for these negatives. For instance, if you are afraid to be more creative because of the fear of failure, remind yourself that you’ll never know if you’re creative idea will be a success if you don’t implement it.

Creativity Makes Life More Exciting

Being creative just adds a certain spark to life that makes it more exciting. If you haven’t found your creative side yet, I strongly urge you to explore the depths of your thoughts and mind, and choose an activity, which will allow you to explore your creativity.

We as humans naturally need to be creative, and once you find your creativity, you will become a much happier person!

Very inspiring post! I think that creativity is like a muscle; the more you use it, the more creative you will get. And I totally agree with you on the 4 points that stifle the creative process.

Yup. Creativity is just like any muscle for sure. I've noticed my non creative days, and it's when I'm not stimulating creativity at all. There are certain things you can do exercise it, just like doing an exercise for your body.

Good article. Made me think!

I still not sure which weighs more : fear of being judged or fear of failure.

It's heart wrenching the opportunities that we let pass because of too many what ifs.

I would say fear of failure. It's easier than you think to overcome the fear of being judged. For some reason fear of failure is extremely difficult to overcome.

Yeah, you could pretend not to care about what people would think of you, until you actually stop caring or convince yourself you have stopped caring.

Fear of failing can only be overcomed by actually failing, and getting the right attitude to learning from your mistakes.

Thing is, no one wants to fail.
