When the Patriots win the Super Bowl on Sunday, I am not going to be as miserable as I usually am. Instead, I will cheer for the fact that their wide receiver Bernard Reedy will earn a Super Bowl ring (and he might not even be in uniform).
When he receives it, that will not be the most shining moment of his life, his year, his month or even his week. His most important moment will be when he climbs into his Care Ride van, drives to a person's house, assists them into the vehicle and then drops them off at their destination.
And he won't get a ring for it.
He will get $11 per hour.
Care Ride is a company that provides transportation for people with disabilities and the elderly.
Win or lose (probably win), Reedy has pledged to return to work at Care Ride in Florida as soon as he is able.
Although the company is not a charitable organization and does collect fees for their work, it appears that Reedy is in it for more than the whopping $11 per hour. If the Patriots win, he will earn $112,000 (even if he doesn't even suit up). But that won't stop him from helping those people in need.
According to Reedy,
“As soon as our offseason officially starts, I’ll be back at Care Ride when I’m able to. The work don’t stop. Everybody still needs help.”
Reedy masterfully assists a person who uses a wheelchair.
How many fantasy points does he get for that?
By NFL standards, Reedy has faced quite a bit of adversity. At only 5'8" he does not fit the trend of giant, lanky wide receivers. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2014. He has been cut 6 times in 4 seasons. In addition, he spent all of 2016 rehabbing a knee he injured in 2015.
Since November 19th, Reedy...
- Was cut by the Bucs
- Was signed to the Patriots practice squad
- Bounced between the active roster and practice squad
- Returned 4 punts for 32 yards
- Was cut from the practice squad on January 3rd
- Went back to Care Ride
- Was resigned by the Patriots on January 17
Although that kind of bumpy ride might cause anyone to call it quits, this is not the case for Reedy. Here's his take:
"That's just what comes with the NFL and what teams need for them," Reedy said. "My job is to stay ready, be respectful, be coachable and be that positive person that I've always been. Like I will always be ready, even through the ups and downs, being released, getting put back on [the roster], I'm still going to be the same old person regardless of what might happen."
Determination.
I would imagine it takes a tremendous amount of guts and determination to simply not give up, walk away and perhaps start your own service provider company. Where does he get the motivation to keep going?
You got it. He is inspired by the people he helps.
“I used to think about a lot of the people I would pick up and the situations that they [were] in and the stories I heard. Some of the stories, the normal average person wouldn’t believe, but that stuff’s true,” Reedy said. “It’s just ironic that I’ve had a job like that in the situation that I was in. To be around positivity and listen to people go through what I went through — I went through it sportswise and they went through it in life. It was tough to want to play and to want to be on somebody’s team and [I] just [didn’t] get the break yet, but I also thought, ‘What about the people on life support? What about the people who can’t walk that want to walk again?’ That stuff’s way more serious than running around and playing football.”
Although there is a very strong possibility that Reedy won't even play on Sunday, there will be no one on that field who accomplishes anything greater than what Reedy has done this season.
No drive on Sunday will be nearly as important as the ones Reedy executed in September.
One week after making the Tampa Bay 53 man roster to start the season, Reedy did something he usually doesn't do during the football season. He reported for duty at Care Ride.
While the rest of his new teammates left Florida to avoid Hurricane Irma, Reedy stayed behind to transport several of Care Ride's clients to evacuation shelters equipped for people with special needs.
An NFL player passed up a private jet ride to safety in order to stick around and help people in need.
Heck I might even actively root for the Patriots.
Nah that's crazy.
But for once, I'll have a reason not to throw my remote.

I know you're into some geeky shit.
Have you checked out Altered Carbon on Netflix yet?
Im burning through it... Fantastic...I recommend.
I have not yet. I will need to make some time for it for sure.
is American Football more popular than Baseball and basketball in America ?
Yep. Football is first while baseball and basketball are roughly tied for second.
Im not sure if I want the eagles to win and have their fans burn down Philly or the Eagles lose and then they burn down Philly
Exactly.... as much as I like rooting against the Patriots, I will rooting against Philly fans even more this time.
humble guy but he won't be getting a ring this year sadly :/
No shortage of heroes on your blog! Another brilliant piece. What an awesome young man!
I honestly think that even The Patriots were okay with Philadelphia’s victory.
They deserved a win...
Inspirational! He sounds like a great guy and I will definitely root for him tomorrow, hope he plays!
Whao. I had no idea who he was at first. Always glad to see athletes transcending their shortcomings and getting things done. Even more glad to see them giving back to the community in any way they can. One more reason to hope the Patriots win.
Me too. People focus too much on the negativity. Their are a lot of good guys out there too.
Exactly. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Cheers.
That's pretty awesome, not the Patriots because I think we can all agree we hate them, but that there is a player that has not lost what it takes to be a human.
@hanshotfirst What an amazing story. I am a big football fan and I have not heard of this player. I know that after writing this I will be doing some research on this young man. As fans of sports we are so often wrapped up in the superstars and the good/bad they they get involved on and we don't stop to look at whats going on with the bubble players in the league. The NFL documentary series "Hard Knocks" has started to shed some light on the struggles of these players. We are also so in tune with the negative incidents that occur. The drugs, guns and other issues that tarnish the reputation of all players. This is the kind of story that can bring positive vibes to the sporting world.
Thanks so much for sharing!!!
My pleasure. Thanks for the thoughtful response. These guys at the end of rosters are pretty amazing to keep trying no matter what.
Many feel all these players are just rich whiny snobs. With so much negativity surrounding professional athletes these stories seem to get brushed under the rug. There are many professional athletes that do have big hearts for those in need. Thanks for sharing some good news because it is often times hard to find these days 😉
Lol Patriots fan here! Even I didn't know he was such a great guy, however I did know he was on our team.
Thanks for this inspiring post. What a wonderful attitude this athlete has and he is being so helpful to so many letting them see how he overcomes issues and continues to give.
Pats aren't gonna win... I think Murphy's law is going to be in play for them this year.
I'll admit that I'd never heard of Reedy working for Care Ride, and I think the world of him now. That's a very honourable thing to do, especially when you've got your financial freedom.
You were right!
I'm suspicious that it's because this is the only year I didn't put money on whatever team was playing the Pats.
Still can’t believe the eagles won. I’m not a pats fan I’m certainly not an eagles fan. I bleed blue for the Giants. Needless to say I did not want the eagles to win.
In each circumstance we wind up, there will dependably be somebody we are superior to anything, so we should remain positive.. I generally say this to myself whenever I experience serious difficulties. A debt of gratitude is in order for sharing this motivational message..
its wonderful moment and great to see. Everyone will be happy to see such things. Our world change can be possible in the good people.
What an amazing game! Max mind went crazy on the last drive...happy that Eagles win...sad that there is no overtime...the end of imcredible playoffs!
Incredible post, I would never bet against the Pats! Tom Terrific will lead the way!
Mehn pats could be heartless
Patriots lost!

Great work!
It is nice to see an NFL player giving back to society, more power to his elbows.
I wish him good luck, talents should be encouraged to grow. Awesome post here
God bless him! Those are just the sort of guys we want on the Patriots.
Watch me make a friend.
You are right @hanshotfirst

Always wish for the Pat's to win because they do almost everything for the community. Work hard to achieve their goals. They deserve the respect and I think we should change our attitude towards the community for the betterment of all.

great post brother. I think I got something to learn from your post
Good to recognize one of the great sub-stories of this Super Bowl. There are always a group of borderline players who never gave up and they are often very good people.
woww I like your posts friend

Love this story. Really inspirational and it's nice to hear about a pro-sportsperson doing good in the community rather than just blinging it up with their millions. Great post, thanks for sharing
