Crane flies - the most harmless fellows

in #insect2 years ago

The bigger, the more harmless - is that the rule in the animal world?

Of course not. This is only if you try to mistakenly compare the crane flies with mosquitoes, as I have done for many years.

But there is one more thing that can be done wrong about these harmless animals - to scream in horror when they appear nearby and be killed instantly just because they are big and look scary, or because they really look like huge mosquitoes, i.e. they look like huge bloodsuckers.

The truth is that they are actually very shy and scared.
And they are probably even more terrified than us when meeting us.
(You see how this guy here is trying to hide under the plant just because I'm trying to photograph it.)

(Oh, I know how it looks this🤭, but I just wanted to photograph the fig leaf here, not them. So, it seems they are not so shy. 😅)

What I learned about them while preparing this post is that they are not even able to kill other insects to feed, let alone bite humans. (And that they don't bite, I've known that for a long time.)

They also live a very short time, so I think they should be respected.

So every time a crane fly loses its way and gets in our house, I just catch up, grab it with two handfuls, and carefully pull it out into the garden where it belongs. Hoping that it will live the short days of its life in peace, without being eaten or killed by mistake by a frightened person.

And here I'm not talking about their larvae, which are considered pests, and which, given that they are crawling creatures, are not my thing. 😄

What I'm trying to tell you is just not to be afraid.
