Water boatmen
Water boatmen are common but rather unusual insects which make their homes in water, particularly weedy ponds. They consume algae and plant debris scattered in the water. They are best known for their unusual courting song in which the males attract the females by rubbing their front legs on a ridge on their foreheads. The females only lay one egg at a time which they attach to plant stems on floating algae in the water.
