Thanks in large part to your posts, I've come to realize that almost everything we're told about "national security" really boils down to money.
In a nutshell, Russia has a lot of natural resources and is in the perfect location to provide it to most of Europe.

Japan, at least historically. I doubt they are actually interested in a war, they are much more concerned with the South, where they have some "common ground".
