Counting millions of ballot papers by hand proved to be a life-threatening job for hundreds of election staff in Indonesia, as over 270 died and nearly 2,000 fell ill after working long hours, an official has said.
As many as 272 staff have died just 10 days after Indonesia held presidential and regional elections, mostly of fatigue-related illnesses, Arief Priyo Susanto, spokesman for the General Elections Commission (KPU), said on Sunday. Some 1,878 others had fallen ill after working long hours to count millions of ballots manually.

Something about this seems strange
It kinda seems like an Onion article... 270 dead from fatigue?? Insane

by the people, for the people, with the cost of their souls. Poetic.
It sounds like they need to consider pathogen vectors & sanitation during their democratic process.
The article is also poor reporting and most probably misconstrues or selectively omits information. a few million elections have probably been successfully held without comparable calamity. It is more likely that election fraud is occurring and/or the article is naively or intentionally misleading.
Demoncracy kills! This seems to be more a case of pilot error though, rather than the result of voting. What hellhole could work hundreds of people to death as a cost saving measure? None I want to work for. I have worked plenty hard in my day, even until I physically threw up, but I did not suspect my life was at risk. I really don't grasp how someone can work until they so drain their vital essence they keel over dead.
Just doesn't make sense.
Thanks!
