WhatsApp was founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, both former employees of Yahoo!. After Koum and Acton left Yahoo! in September 2007, the duo traveled to South America to take a break from work. At one point, they applied for jobs at Facebook but were rejected.
WhatsApp is going to go completely free, dropping its annual subscription fee. The Facebook-owned chat app will instead look to make money by letting companies talk to people in messages. WhatsApp charges $0.99, or roughly the same in pence, after the first year. But it will drop that charge and go completely free.
