Nana said that one of nowadays he would miss, that she, Mariam, would sneak past his fingers, hit the ground, and break a bone. Yet, Mariam did not trust that Jalil would drop her. She trusted that she would dependably arrive securely into her dad's perfect, very much manicured hands.

They sat outside the kolba, in the shade, and Nana served them tea. Jalil and she recognized each other with an uneasy grin and a gesture. Jalil never raised Nana's shake tossing or her reviling.
