To make it clearer, the sooner you vote prior to the 15 minutes mark, regardless of whose content you voted, the larger portion of your vote and of its resulting curation is retrieved to the reward pool, or in other words, wasted.

Voting my post or your own post after 14 minutes is still not a complete catastrophe, but voting any post within the first 10 minutes is a mutual loss of a 1/3 or more of the author or curation rewards for you, and of a 1/3 or more of the author rewards of the recipient of the vote, depending of how soon the vote was cast.
The closer the vote is to immediate, the bigger the mutual loss is.
after 15 minutes, 100% of the vote counts both for you and for the recipient.
There is still some use to voting slightly before the 15 minutes, in that it increases your chances of being the first voter and receiving increased curation rewards for doing so.
