You know the saying – there is no unselfish kind act? How it is such a paradox. How people scratch their heads and bite their nails in the process of finding an “unselfish good deed” and still be met with – “Well that still makes you feel good, right? So it is selfish.” Wrong. Selflessness exists. And it exists in the knowledge that beyond your self, there is another self… and that other self- is no one else but you. It is a paradox cause see… you are doing something for your own self in a different form, but not for your self as you know him or her in the form you carry through this lifetime. Confusing?
Let’s try something else.
A dear friend and I once coined the term “Non-malicious selfishness” when we were talking about the win-win situation of mutual growth and happiness that occurs between two people when a good deed is exchanged with good intention. Interdependence is the essence of humanity. We take, we give. We desire to take, we desire to give. This is solely because here, there are distinctions between the self and the other. Where the other meets the self, I their highest essences, ego dissolves. There is no self. There is no other. And in that state of union, there is no selfishness. There is only selflessness. For there is no self, no construct of the ego, there is just being.
Love is the essence and at the very core of everything we feel and do. There is such raw, profound, elevating, expanding, free-flowing beauty in love that is unconditional. In the very real feeling of selflessness that a lot of people, who believe that there IS in-fact selfless love, struggle to describe or validate the feeling of. Love, so strong that you want to sacrifice your very being. Love so powerful that it makes you shed your skin, leading you into the rebirth of your being in uncontainable rejuvenation. Uncontainable as it flows out into the spaces you occupy, the people you touch. The words you speak. Love. It is contagious and its truth lies in the union of the self and the other, dissolving the boundary between the two.
Dare I say that therefore, selflessness exists.
