Photoreal boiling water simulation in Houdini + Redshift

in #houdini7 years ago

Boiling water simulation I did eatlier this year in Houdini + Redshift in my free time.
Idea was to make something that would fool the viewer in thinking he/she is looking at the reference footage, while it was actually the render from the start.

When first starting this I thought it was going to be a relatively easy task. Everybody knows what boiling water looks like right?
Wrong.
Once you get into it there are actually quite a lot of different elements working together to make it look real.
These small scale simulations, where a lot of control is required are actually quite tricky. From the look and movement of the air bubbles, to the droplets of the glass. The condensations, heat distortion, and the speed of it all.

I looked at a lot of reference videos (which are actually harder to find then you'd think) boiled some water myself, and experimented with a whole bunch of different settings.
Overal pretty happy with the whole result, and included a breakdown of the whole thing as well.

Learned quite a lot from it and had a lot of fun making it.
Also did a 1.5 hour tutorial on how to create the whole thing, which you can view here:

Let me hear your thoughts if you have any questions about the process of the whole thing.

Cheers
