Self Seeding Sunflowers! More FREE Food!

I really love when plants volunteer on the homestead! We almost always have pumpkins coming up in front beds where pumpkins were kicked off the front porch the year before. And the compost pile will always produce numerous vegetables! Sometimes even the Animals will plant seeds for you!

We feed Black Oil Sunflower Seeds, or BOSS, to all the animals for extra nutrition! We gave Mr. Christmas a bunch in the spring apparently more than he could eat... So right next to him we have several beautiful sunflowers growing!

I was excited that we could harvest some to feed our animals and even eat some ourselves. But... The goldfinches have already eaten most of them! It's a good thing we love wildlife as much as our own animals!

Maybe we can beat them before the next ones are ready! Thanks for reading!

Besides the truth of how nice it is to get those unexpected volunteer plants you just made me chuckle...."Mr. Christmas"??? Really lololol thats funny....

good! laughter is medicine!

I love free food! Volunteer plants are so inspiring! It also makes for a much easier garden to tend, being hardier. I bet the birds like your farm! :)

Yes Yes Yes and Yes!

I am growing sunflowers again this year now that we have chickens. I have grown them in the past and the did quite well, I did manage to save a bunch of seed from them (which is what I am growing this year's from) but the stupid blue jays ate most of them before I could get to them all. Then, when they ate every last one, the came up to our back glass door and started knocking on it! Little jerks!

LOL, birds are funny!

We joke that there must be about 1,000 tomato plants somewhere "down the creek". We toss our bad ones into the creek that runs along the garden. :)

Lol, that's funny! I have found daffodils in creek beds miles from civilization and I know it must have washed there.

Gorgeous flowers! Thanks to Mr Christmas.

Thank you! He is a good bird!

Nice post1the sun flower looks very pretty!
I'm just thinking of the tons of thing to do with those.

If the birds didn't get there first, lol!

Beautiful shots! That turkey looks really well fed.

Love free plants popping up all over my garden and those raided core beds have leeks popping up all over them.

Thanks for a great plant post!

I appreciate it !
