My husband and I have strive to be debt free. We have very little debt and we are going to into a little but for our house build but it isn't much and is less than what rent costs. But we bought our land outright and if everything goes in with-in 10 years maybe less since each week here seems to be getting better and better, we will have what loan we are taking out paid back. In two years I should have my student loans paid off and then we will be able to apply that money to the house loan too. Would love to have all the debt paid off in 5 years instead of the 10 years we calculated it will take. My husband does work long hour shifts that are around 13 hours but he works a rotating shift so out of every 14 days he only works 7 days. 2 days on 2 days off 3 days on 2 days off 2 days on, 3 days off. Then it starts all over again. It is nice he was able to find a job like that, because before he found the job he has now, he was gone 60+ hours a week 5 days a week.
It sucked.

Those student loans tend to haunt people forever. The on some, off some work can be nice too. I've had some similar schedules to that of your husband in the past.
He likes it, the pay is decent and the benefits are pretty good and he gets 5 weeks of vacation pay a year now since this past year, he has been there long enough to go from 4 weeks to 5 weeks. Sometimes because of repairs they have shut downs, he saves most of it for when they have shut downs, and what ever is stockpiled at the end of the year he takes in the Month of December, which is really nice, because not only is it Christmas time but two of our children have birthdays that same week one on the 27th and another on the 31st.
