I love the term self-efficient. It really encapsulates what it's all about. I like to talk about appropriate technology. I love rocket stoves and mass heaters. To make them as efficient as possible you can use ceramic fibre and insulating fire brick. These use a lot of energy and resources to make but in the end you get a very clean burning renewable source of heat, so it's appropriate use.
