Give them an inch, and they'll show up in the front yard

Guineas. I let them out for their grass hour (more on that later), and then I'm inside, thinking Boy, they sure sound close. Because they were directly outside the front window, looking in, and yelling, of course.

I notice the beehives are at peak attractiveness this time of year. Capital view out the front window these days.

The guineas usually don't get this far even in summer (in this direction - they rarely visit the house, but they range far everywhere else)

The guinea grass hour was instituted because it seemed to me like guineas had this deep desire for grass (not substitutes like lettuce), and it seemed they were quieter at night when they got some, and I thought maybe their digestion is disrupted in the winter living on chicken feed?, and maybe all the yelling is due to stomachaches?

At any rate, when the ground is exposed, they get let out for an hour before bed, and they feast on the grass like it's a race, cropping as fast as they can, all business.

They know the drill, and when I open the door, all their heads shoot up, they converge, and they come streaking out the door. Before any of the hens come bumbling along Hmm, is that an open door I see?, I've shut the door behind the guineas. Hens, when they do slip out along with the guineas, are a pain because they will go until it's dead dark. Not gonna miss this chance. No! Not ready for bed yet! Still no!

Sort:

I've never raised guineas, nor did my parents, but our neighbors had some. They were kinda noisy! But so funny to watch!

Kinda noisy is right! The chickens probably wish they had hands to cover their ears sometimes.

Ha ha ha! That provided an amusing mental picture!
