THE RANDOMNESS OF HOMESTEADING - OUR FIRST CHICK HATCHED!

in #homesteading7 years ago

Today is a happy day for my people!

So there I was, working hard on the land grinding some more stumps. My son, "Monster Truck the Pepper" was there at my side, sleeping again...

Suddenly, out of seemingly nowhere, I heard my cell phone ringing over the roar of the tractor engine. Thankfully, I had just grabbed it off the charger in the truck when I got my camera to photograph my sleeping "helper."

"This is @papa-pepper. Talk to me baby."

I answered the phone in my normal manner and waited for the reply. On the other end was @mama-pepper, and I could hear the excitement in her voice as she said to me, "Papa guess what!"

"WE'VE GOT CHICKS!"

Immediately I woke up Monster Truck, shut off the tractor and grabbed by camera so I could vlog while I drove!

DREAMS ARE MERGING WITH REALITY

For us, this is just more of our vision coming true. We have enough chickens still making eggs for us so we have been letting the broody ones sit. Every once in a while a foul one will break and stink, but otherwise nothing new has been happening.

Our first egg also came for us while we were on steemit, which was 11 months ago. Now, we have hatched our first chick. Some months ago, we had tried to incubate some with an incubator, but the humidity was off and nothing ever came of it.

To see this little chick hiding under the wing of its mother is an amazing sight. For us, it means that there is a chance that we will never need to buy eggs or chicken again. Now that would be amazing! Personally, I love seeing life just reproduce itself like this, and the baby animals are so cute. It was a happy day for all of us.

In situations like this, it almost looks like the new chick is waiting with its mother, just hoping that another egg pops open and a new sibling comes out. There is no guarantee that any others will hatch, or that this one will make it through the night, but we are optimistic.

The randomness of these life events working on the homestead can be a lot of fun, and some of the events keep things very exciting and encouraging. Today was one of those days for us! As an added bonus, if anyone actually watches the video and is the first to reply with the name of this chick, I'll give you 10 STEEM! Just be the first to reply with the correct name from the video!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

What a beautiful experience you have shared with us tonight!!! You are so elaborate in your posts that I feel like I am there!!! The kids are so darling in the video, very mature and knowledgeable. What a wonderful life you live :) SUNSHINE247

That is an amazing and encouraging comment! Thanks so much!

Well deserved Friend!! SUNSHINE247

I don't know too much about homesteading but I always wanted to have my own chickens to get their eggs. Congratulations on the hatch, do you think the rooster dad would eat that chick if it got close to it?

Not sure about the rooster, but I'll be making a new house for the mama hens anyway just to be safe.

The name of the chick is steemy :) Welcome to this beautiful world.

Just a little late on that, but thanks for playing!

No worries :)

Congratulations on the new chick(s) @little-peppers. I hope a bunch more hatch, at least a dozen. Woo Hoo!

Nice sharing..👌

papa guess what we got new little chicken in the home. I feel the excitement in her voice. So cute. :-)

Very excited!

You got that right , with homesteading, you never know what to expect . Your video put a smile on my face , the girls were really happy to show you the new baby chick members . Congrations to the Pepper Family

Yes they were. Little Sweet-Pepper just standing there clapping, she knew it was time to celebrate!

Congratulation @papa-pepper, I am enjoying your posting, and I try to learn from your spirit on steemit. Have a nice day

Thank you very much!

Beautiful chick @papa-pepper. welcome Steemy.. I like this name..!!:)

We like the name too! Thanks!

Awww so cute. The joy of new life of your first baby chick. Welcome to the world little Steemy or Steemie, not sure how you will spell it. :)

I was thinking with a 'Y' originally, but I have not considered spelling it "STEEMIE!"

I like that even better!

What a beautiful thing the randomness of life is. One second you're on steemit the next you have the gift of life in the form of baby chicks. They're going to be some great Steen chickens.

It is beautiful! Thanks!

Very funny chicks @papa-pepper, his voice will accompany your every morning, keep him guard.

Yes, we are happy to have him!

Que ternura de gallina con su pollito, amo animales soy de una granja y la vida en granja es maravillosa @papa-pepper

So many chicks.

So little time.

The incubator didn't work for us either. I'm pretty sure my ducks finally made a nest they like somewhere. They keep disappearing for hours or days. Glad things are working out for you. Did those stitches work out good so far?

I think that I may have a cute piglet photo challenge soon, as @bluerthangreen & @allforthegood just ahd some piglets too.

What kind are yours? And yes, the stitches are so far so good!

We have no idea what kind they are. Around here piglets almost get passed around like kittens. The sow was short black and fat and the hog long white and slim. I was told the hog was a bacon pig because he was so long. My friends brother sold him to me cheap and full grown.

Congratulations!!!! And to think I get excited over the first cucumber. I'd be calling Ben about the first baby chick for sure. Let's hope there are lots more to come!

Cucumbers are cute too, especially when they are babies!

your are so right @papa-pepper baby animals are so cute, great to see new life just spring back into existence

Nice work again @papa-pepper , you and the Pepper clan are living the dream! Hope you get a dozen more to hatch out, otherwise those are going to be stinky eggs!

Yeah, we had a few stinkers already.

nice post sir

Great post!

Wow your children must be so excited. Its a new experience and a warm one indeed.

Yes, we are all very excited!

I love the name Steemie, its so cute. :D I love watching a new chick hatch. :D We have successfully incubated some of our own chicks in the past and really look forward to doing it again in the future. :D

There is nothing quite like the feeling you get when you watch new life coming into the world. :D

Hey, @Papa-Pepper! What an exciting day on the homestead! Every day brings new adventures. You are well on your way to becoming self-sustainable. Fresh eggs, chickens, and pork! All you need now is a cow or a goat to complete the meal!

Congratulations!! That's really exciting! I'm working on incubating my first quail, mysel. I hope it works out!!

The possibilities of being able to make new lives so "easily" is sort of crazy cool!! Congrats again!! I hope they all hatch!

Congrats on the baby chick! I purchased replacements about a month and a half ago for the hens that had been brutally attacked by a coon last fall. I am hoping that we too will be able to get some eggs to hatch...That is the ultimate in sustainable living....
Thanks for sharing this post...it gives hope to those of us who have yet to hatch some eggs!

Firsts are always cool on a new homestead, there is always something happening, something to learn, something to explore. Always a new challenge & something to figure out. Glad you have taken that next step to self-sufficiency. Congrats on the new chick!
