GOT TO KEEP THEM SEPARATED - BEING PRACTICAL AND EDUCATIONAL

in #homesteading7 years ago

This required some quick work!

Like many other animals, rabbits will fight. Also, like many animals, they have some nasty teeth. For this reason, it can be important to keep them separated.

BAD BOY BUCKS

Last month I made a trade with a young entrepreneur and wound up with a few new bucks. So far, they have mostly been doing well, until recently.

This poor guy apparently got his nose bit a few times. We certainly don't want these rabbits getting hurt, so we had to evaluate the issue and remedy the situation. Here is the basic problem.

Do you see how his head fits through the fencing separating the pens? Yup, he'll stick his head into the other bucks cage and then that bugger will bite him! OUCH! For problem-solving like this, I try to incorporate the @little-peppers. This way, if they ever run into similar issues one day, or find themselves in situations where they need to think about how to fix an issue, they will have some good experience. Lots of things in life can be used to teach, train, and instruct others, and we like to do just that with our children.

BUILD A WALL

The goal was to build a wall, but I didn't just want to show them how to do it, I wanted them to learn how.

We like to enjoy education in an organic environment that we call life, rather than a sterile environment. If my child is expected to know how to measure something, it won't just be random lines on a page for the sake of measuring random lines on a page.

There is no red "A" or "F" on a page here to show the child if they successfully completed the task accurately. No, they'll have to measure up!

This board was cut to the length marked, based upon the measurement that Pinkie-Pepper took. In this real life example, she learned the importance of measuring correctly. If the board was too long or too short, it wouldn't work for this project. She can see the importance of mastering the skill, rather than just knowing that she either did it correctly or incorrectly.

In the end, some skills were practiced by a few @little-peppers, we enjoyed some time together, built a small dividing wall, and have made things safer for our rabbits. Life is truly a learning experience, but only if you let it be!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Hah, your title had me a little confused, it read to me as "practical and educational should be kept separate." Glad you were writing about the opposite of that instead, it's a very important point to make.

Ah, good point. Sorry about that.

Nice. That's a good decision. Thanks for sharing @papa-pepper

Thank you for checking it out!

Nowadays, since i come up on steemit, have been learning from everything, everything around me seems to become a guide for me.

Yea!!! most tasks have completed in my adult age is due to the fact that i was being train to measure up.

@little-peppers is so beautiful

Hopefully your future child becomes a successful child ...😎😎😎

I hope so too. Thank you.

Way to go dad! Nothing better than let them problem solve and do the work.

Right! The best way to learn!

Cute rabbits. We should good habitation for them to safety life. Every pet animals like a family member. Excellent post

i always learn something new from this @papa-pepper post.

The Rabbit is this tall!

Awesome child mind/body/project mashup.

LOL - At least it knows how to duck!

What an interesting post about rabbits. I never knew that! Thanks for the post.

Beautiful rabbit
My greetings are a wonderful family

Hands on education is what teaches them to think!

Absolutely!

What is the main reason for the rabbits on your homestead? Manure..pets?

These days it is manure and to sell as pets.

LOL! Now I have Offspring playing in my brain... 🎶😎🎶

Well done with the rabbits - when I was much (MUCH) younger, we had them as pets, and I never realized they were so aggressive. Love the family project you did for the bunnies because... "Hey they don't pay no mind..."

LOL - Yeah, me too, that, and Rodney King.

Holy cannoli, Batman! I never realized the connection before. I also completely missed the "Come out and play" being a Warriors reference. Thanks for my Google lesson of the day. 😊

Great to see kids getting stuck in and doing something real. Sure kids can have an Xbox n' stuff. no harm in that.

But you need balance.

You need perspective.

Great to see this, inspiring.

Great post, I've not been able to find alot of information on this elsewhere in the past. We had two male rabbits, at first they got on really well, but once the smaller one had got to about a year old he'd had enough. We came down one morning to a bloody scene where they'd been fighting all night. We had to then keep them totally seperated, which was just a bit sad to see as the eldest one still really loved his little brother!

Ouch! That is hard to see.

I didn't watch Watership Down as a kid, so it was quite a shock to see that!

Rabbits are so cute.

Real life ...

Measure Twice, cut once ... or bunny gets a bleeding nose.

Ouch! Nice interpretation!

Holy-moley! (added an "e" to moly to stay in critter-mode/explaining pun haha) My upvote added 10 steem bucks + change to yr ttl, Merry Christmas @papa-pepper, lol! Not to brag - I'm just tickled cuz if you look at my blog - I'm still Steeming along, is all I can say! Yea! Excellent post, informative & cute. Thank you, and seriously, Merry Christmas! ("measure twice, cut once")

Nice job! I am sure that bunny will be happy now that he has some protection from the bitting!

Oh yes, he will like it!

I really appreciate parents who actually take the time to let their kids help. It takes twice as long to let a kid do the project with supervision than it does to do it yourself and sometimes the busy day leads to people taking shortcuts by only having the kids do things that they won't need supervision for. I never really appreciated (at the time) that my parents did that for me.

Growing up I sometimes kind of hated learning on the job, there's always more fun things, but there is no replacement for the time I spent with my folks particularly on projects that I wanted to do and that one of my folks would patiently help without doing it for me. I loved the one-on-one attention too!

I think the experience made me less hesitant to try things that I otherwise would never try myself. Calling a handy man for every little thing or having your apartment deposit kept for not doing a good enough cleaning job is both frustrating and expensive.

It probably also made me better value others who do things with their hands and who are in service industries. They are often undervalued in US society.

Your kids may not always be grateful for the attention now but you're building strong kids who are good members of society.

It takes twice as long to let a kid do the project with supervision than it does to do it yourself

No kidding, but if we ever want to actually have help doing it, they'll need to learn. Good point! Thanks!

Hey do you know anyone on Steemit who can make concept art? I need a logo to publish my music. I can pay in Steem or SBD

You are a genius. Good on ya making this!

Thank-you! It was actually being discussed as something that might be handy to have here. I was suggesting how it could be done and then thought... what the heck... why don't I just DO it instead of TALKING about it. So I did.

well done Pinkie and the rest of the team, it may surprise you, but in 50 years time, you will remember building that wall to keep the rabbits apart.
Along with all the other things that you do, That's why grandad Pepper thinks a little slower, he has got so many memories in his head that he has to sort through them every now and then, especially the older ones that are tucked away in a dark corner somewhere.

Many tasks can be done better and more quickly by an adult, but it is so much better when you slow yourself down and give your children a chance to try it themselves. Even if they don't get it quite right, they will learn and retain much more because they had to make the effort. You're doing a great job, @papa-pepper! Resteemed.

Good fences makes good neighbors!

Great job@papa-pepper. Experience is the best teacher.

Love it man! When we begin the building of all hutches and the coop I definitely want my girls involved in the building process. So much can be learned and shared during this moment, plus it will give them a sense of ownership in the care and rearing of their animals. Thanks for sharing.

Great work little peppers. Lesson well taught @papa-pepper and with a meaning too fantastic

Good piece, it has impacted my rabbit plans. I didn't know males will fight like that, females yes, males no. I had planned to have an all male tractor with a winch that pulls it at a slow rate across a field, thus more or less mowing it. Back to the drawing board and more skull sessions.
