Haha! Some people do, I used to. For me, it's the smell. If you can get past the smell of a ripe papaya and focus on the flavor, wow it's great! Also it begins to grow mold as it ripens (that can be off-putting for sure!)
When I was living in California I asked myself how people could eat papayas that were shipped in form Hawaii, they really tasted bad but now that I live on Hawai'i Island I eat them every day! That first impression of a fruit made me think I didn't like papayas and I thought I'd never buy them again but now they are growing at the eco village I live at so I can eat huge ones for free!

That's awesome! Same thing for me. I ate a bad papaya in the U.S. and then lived in Venezuela for a while and ate them regularly and drank smoothies.
