Caught a Fox on Camera Stealing a Chicken

in #homesteading7 years ago

I had these chickens in with the pigs. The area is about 3/4 of an acre all fenced in. My plan was to have the chickens in with the pigs So they could eat the bugs, ticks, help brake pest cycles and spread pig manure wile they scratch through it (witch they love to do).

It was all going great for about a month, then this guy showed up! I did not build the chickens a coop. They were sleeping in the trees about 10 yards from the pigs and didn't think a 30 pound fox would want to get close to three 300 pound pigs. But I was wrong.

The fox killed 6 out of the 8 chickens the first night. It looked like he tried to hide 5 of them for later and took one with him.

We learned the hard way that we will not be able to let our chickens be %100 free range because of the predators. Now we make sure to have at least a coop for them to go in and have been adding electric netting as added protection

Would love to hear how you keep predators away from you flock. was thinking about a guard dog. Does anyone use a guard dog? If so how well does it work?

Oh man, that sucks! Hope you get it figured out and that was the fox's last free meal.

Thank you @aunt-deb!! Me to.. Hadn't seen it around lately. Knock on wood.

we have two dogs and four cats that patrol our chickens. never had any issues in 4yrs other then a raccoon that got two chickens last year.

I'll be looking soon for one. Thanks @fixedbydoc!👍

Sorry to hear, thats a big hit...
Interesting music selection, kinda reminds me of streetfighter.. Bet you wish you could dragon punch that fox? Suppose that is what the bushmaster is for, happy hunting. I would love to see your davey crocket fox hat.
(SMOKEBOMB!)

I almost got him one night with the bushmaster but hadn't see him around in a wile.
