The Weeds Aren't Winning

in #homesteading7 years ago (edited)

I've been waiting for magic to happen in my garden.

The weeds have been growing as fast as the strawberry plants and I've been turning a blind eye. I guess I've just been waiting for magic to make the weeds vanish. Wishful thinking, but much more pleasant than reality.

😱

There are four rows forty feet long. 160 feet of strawberries and weeds. On the hottest day of the year this far I set myself the daunting task of weeding those rows.

I strategically chose to start with the row farthest from the fence. The center of the garden is less weedy than near the fence. Weeds are forbidden in the garden but grow unchecked outside the fence. They are always encroaching on my garden space, trying to take over a few weeds at a time. There is a constant battle along the fence to keep the weeds at bay. Too bad scarecrows don't work for weeds.

Five feet into the first row I considered a break. Ten feet in I was leaning towards quitting. As I approached the halfway point of the first row, along with my delusional thoughts of despair I wondered if I left the weeds with the plants if maybe the plants would grow faster and choke out the weeds.

Finally persistence paid off and I made it to the end of the first row. The children were napping and I was on a roll so row two was started with great enthusiasm.

There are about a dozen plants with blooms already.

Most of the plants have lots of buds in clusters like this.

The weediest rows were respectfully left untouched. We'll savor that drudgery for another day.

Finally can check this row off the list!

Soon all zeal had vanished and all that was left was a long row of weeds and my withered self. In a mechanical daze I finally reached the end.

There is a Hawthorn tree in the garden. The Hawthorn is sometimes called the fairy tree, so maybe the garden fairies will come tonight.

I love it.

There is a constant battle along the fence to keep the weeds at bay.

If only the fence could keep out all the weeds. ;) Keep up the fight.

I found you through the @payitforward contest. You were featured by @mtnmeadowmomma. Congratulations.

Thanks! I made it almost halfway through the last row today, so the end is in sight....at least until next week 😂

Wanted to let you know that @mtnmeadowmomma featured you in their entry to the Pay It Forward Curation Contest.

There is a first time entry bonus for those who come join the contest that you might be interested in. Read that post for how to qualify for the bonus.

If you figure out how to make the weeds go away magically please share the secrete. My back would really appreciate knowing how this is done....lol

Thanks for letting me know! It’d be nice to have a notification when someone tags or features you.

Have you checked out Discord yet? If you sign up for Ginabot through Minnow Support, you'll get notifications!

Yes I am on discord, I just haven’t spent much time in it yet. I’ll get there one day 😁

Strawberries like mulch, and done properly, there will be no weeds.... Plus it keeps the berries clean.

I’ve tried mulch but my free range chickens go wild scratching through it. It doesn’t take long for them to make a huge mess and damage the plants 😲

That's one of the lesser reasons we don't let ours run wild. Our food gardens are fenced, so they would not be able to get to them. But they'd do some major damage to the herb and flowerbeds! The main reason we don't free range is that we would not have a flock at all in a week, our predator load is so high.

I have an 8 foot fence around my garden which keeps the deer and most of the turkeys out, but the bantams and some of the smaller chickens can still squeeze through the fence. We definitely have predators, but I’ve figured how to manage it to where never lost a chicken to predators. I love seeing the chickens out. They are happy and the eggs are great!

Weeding is daunting but at the same time leaves me feeling accomplished. I've beaten them for another day. Then they secretly grown overnight.

I love your story telling. Puts a smile on my face and I enjoy your homesteading experiences.

I didn't know that about the Hawthorn tree. Fairies. hmmmm....who knew?

Yes I love the feeling of accomplishment when it’s done. It’s much worse in the spring. By mid summer I usually have it under control.

I feel you! my strawberries have been escaping and allowing in intruder plants. Damn super inclusive plants, they just let anything grow with them. I have only 80 ft of strawberries but I chose to weed mine in the hot sun this last weekend, though I still have a few stragglers that need to be put back in line.

I have a bunch of runners that went straggling off into the middle of the row that still need to be dealt with. It be nice if they could just learn to grow in a row 😃

I'm dying laughing. I've found a kindred spirit in your attitude toward things like weeding, and I love the way you described the attempt. Five feet in...ten feet in...oh yes that's me 😂😂

Haha, I’m glad I’m not the only one!

It, gardening, is a much harder task than a lot of people realize, but likewise, the rewards are so so much more than they ever thought at the start of the garden plotting and planning. I agree, the rewards are great. It is a long term investment, but those are often the best!
