Tomato harvest, perhaps the last one
On Friday morning I wasn’t up until 5:45AM. I got my post up and cleaned up the kitchen, but I was a long ways from ready for the day when my helper friend arrived at 8AM.
He went out to see if there was any broccoli to harvest while I was trying to pull together everything he’d need for errands. He set off around 9AM and I made all the phone calls. The broccoli needed to soak for an hour, so I went out and cleaned it up and got it soaking. My helper friend got back from errands as I finished.
I’d had him pick up a couple good sized cabbages and a big bag of grated mozzarella cheese.
I was getting low on zucchini ravioli meals and had eaten the previous batch of cabbage steaks. So I wanted to make a lot more.
We got the first tray loaded and went to put it in the preheated oven, but it hadn’t come on. Wellll, it works better when you turn on the correct knob… sigh…
So we got 2 trays in and they baked well. I even remembered to put the seasonings on before I flipped them.
But I forgot to watch the temperature on the oven, as it’s unreliable and it got hot, so the 1st tray came out rather well done. I ended up with 13 steaks, a couple rather small. I had one for lunch and doubled up some to make a decent meal, and got 8 meals out of the 2 cabbages. I finished these up and cleaned up.
In the meantime, he went out and planted my 2 goldy mums. I am terrible about watering potted plants and I was afraid these wouldn’t fare well with it being so dry around here.
Then he went into the New Herb garden and deadheaded the garlic chives before they could drop seeds everywhere. These are a plant that can go for world domination if not curbed. Then it was time for him to go at noon.
Water on nasturtium leaves
It was cloudy and cool and we hadn’t gotten any rain in the night. This was because my helper friend and I cleaned up anything that might get ruined in the rain on Thursday. Tom, on the other hand, didn’t clean up his stuff 20 minutes away, and he did get some rain.
So that meant I was going to be watering again this weekend. I decided to get a jump on it and went out and got 3 sprinklers going. I managed to get 6 gardens done by dark. I set up the next 3 so I can start them when I get up in the morning.
My brother wanted broccoli slaw from the harvest, so he made that. We’d decided on pesto chicken to go with it. It was to be an early meal as he was going out to a comedy show in the evening.
On Saturday, I have to keep watering and clean out the trash shed and go to the dump. I should work on the health insurance application, but I need a functioning brain for that…so we will see. It’s to be cloudy and cool, so maybe I’ll just curl up under a blanket and read some of my new-to-me Sara Paretski books…

I always love eating fresh tomatoes. They are healthy for our wellbeing
Zucchini ravioli sounds very nice! I could eat this everyday! These tomatoes are so red. Would love to taste the cabbage cooked this way too.
Watering plants and garden take a long time! It would take me two hours to water half the garden.
I look forwards to dry and sunny days. It’s strange that you have hotter weather than us at the moment.
Just on Thursday was it hot. The other days this week, and this weekend, have been much colder.
I feel like eating those tomatoes raw from here, there are so fresh.
I can almost smell those cabbage steaks. I made them once and I admit they were wonderful. Your's look so delicious my mouth is watering, ;-) ♥
They are mighty good, but so far nothing has beaten the zucchini ravioli. I wish my zucchini had lasted longer... What gardener EVER says that???
