Today we inspected our Top Bar Hive, one week after installing bees. Find out how they have fared and we decide if we need to supplementally feed them or not.

I've always fancied the idea of a top bar hive, but SA doesn't allow them. 😔

Is there a legal reason you can't have them?
Beekeeping seems to be highly regulated here. You can only use langstroth hives and they have to be registered.

As far as I understand the laws here in Australia, we can use any hive we like as long as the comb is removable for inspection. We also need to register our hives.
I'll have to look into it again. Last time I looked we couldn't have top bars in South Australia. That was a couple of years ago, though.

This link from South Australia Primary Industries mentions registering top bar/warre/flow hives so I thing you would be ok. In the past many people believed top bar style hives were illegal because the regulations all reference the hives needing removable FRAMES, which of course top bars don't have. But the intent of the law is that the comb be removable for inspection, which is no problem in a maintained top bar. So i think it has been accepted that bars are an acceptable alternative to frames. But be sure and do your own research 👍👍
Lovely it was to open up a video and find it was an Australian accent. Where are you based ?we have two hives on our property but they are left by a friend of ours. He comes and checks them I really would like to learn be keeping myself but I think I need some time to set aside to learn it properly

I'm in South East Qld, sort of around the Bundaberg area. I've been reading, listening to podcasts and absorbing whatever other information I can find for about 3 years now. I figured this year it was time to build the hive and jump in feet first. Thanks for the lovely comment.
Awesome!!! I'm trying to compile a list of Aussies state by state - if I did that, woudl you mind if I put QLD (Bundaberg area) after your name?
Go for it 👍👍 Would be cool to see a list of Aussie homesteaders.
