Last year just before the first frost, I planted six garlic cloves in one of my raised container garden beds and look what peeked out this week!
When To Plant Garlic For Next Year's Harvest
When planning on having garlic for your pantry next season, you need to get the cloves or garlic bulbs in the ground about two to four weeks before the first frost hits. The reason is, you want to make sure that the roots on the clove/bulb has had a good chance on taking root into the soil.
Last year, I planted some bulbs in the early spring after the ground wasn't frozen anymore and the fear of a late frost had passed; my results were not the best, so I decided last October to get the bulbs in the ground then for this upcoming gardening season.
Seeing the green sprouting out made me smile. I had been outside wandering the property after my walk to the mailbox and thought I'd push aside the leaves I had covered up the garlic with last year and was taken by surprise to see all six had started to sprout up. I gently covered the green sprouts with the leaves again and am imagining using some of the garlic after the harvest to make marinara sauce, homemade garlic spread for bread and rolls and so much more garlic-y goodness!
Hardneck Garlic
I planted a hardneck garlic, which is better for cold winters: and I have that where I live. I am hoping to get two harvests from this type of garlic; one being the cloves themselves as well as the scapes (the green shoots which sprout up above ground- these are great additions to salads and when making homemade salad dressings and I will add some chopped up to my kefir cream cheese this summer or early autumn). I'll remove the scapes a few weeks before the garlic itself is ready to be harvested.
If this year's harvest does good and produces a nice little bundle of garlic for me, I'll probably consider upping the amount I want to plant this coming season for next year. After last spring's failed results, I am hopeful for some awesome tasting garlic coming in about seven months.

I did the same, however The snow and the wind over the winter blew away my sign and well I pulled it thinking it was a seed and had forgotten where I had planted it. LOL, so @hethur240 journal idea is great, so I could have marked it. I have too many gardens and have a hard time keeping track of what is where.
Wow, I didn't know garlic could do all that. I like garlic but only in certain dishes.

very useful information @goldendawne.
thank you for sharing, I personally always waiting for your work
Wow, garlic has a TON of health benefits. It's exciting to see your own hardwork taking shape now. And now, I'm wanting some delicious garlic spread on a piece of toast!! :)
Very nice. I have always wanted to try to grow my own garlic, but I have never gotten around to it. My wife and I use garlic and onions in pretty much everything we cook so it would definitely go to good use if I was able to get some going. You and I are in the same region I think so come next October I might try to get some in the ground.
We'v got some popping up too!😊
I need to get mine in the soil, but this rain is killing me. I have debated just going out and planting in the rain. LOL
Most of my recipes include olive oil, garlic, and basil. I'll be planting lots of garlic this spring, a lot of it around my baby fruit trees on their drip lines. I read the garlic is supposed to ward off some of the underground pests from the trees :)
I got my garlic in the end of October last year, late for me, as I try for the first week of October. But I guess it didn't mind because it is up. I found a sprout yesterday.
Yay! I love garlic and watching natural grown food pop up out of the ground. Thank you for the helpful hints and when I get my land I will be sure to return with lots of questions. :)
I upvoted your post and am following you, I joined steemit to share my passion for e recyling and gardening. i plan to show people various cloning and air layering techniques, Follow me if youd like to see my post's on it. Im a huge gardener, its actually my main career in summer, im a landscaper and i do garden co hosting with seniors that cant garden anymore, i use their space and water... i bring the seeds and do all the work and we split to crop, i sell in farmers markets etc this year i plan to propose a community garden to my town council using some un used town land, rather then them cutting grass on it all summer, turn it into a garden, anyone who wants can come volunteer, and the more hours you put in, the more pounds of food you take home in the fall.
GARLIC! Home-made yogurt mixed with some fine-chopped cucumbers and garlic is one of my favorites (especially for these late-night cravings; and of course, a very healthy option)
Just moved on our farm last March so Garlic is really the first big thing I've planted. We put 300 in the ground the first week of November. They are up about 5 inches. Seems a lot of folks grow garlic in our area so I wanted to try. Actually that is going to be our motto for the next few years. Try a little of everything and see what works. At least the deer haven't bothered it yet. We like to put the whole garlic on the smoker and smoke them. You can store the smoked garlic in the fridge for many weeks. Smoked garlic makes everything taste better.
