If Homeschooling is For WEIRDOS, I'll Fit Right In

in #homeschool7 years ago (edited)

I am homeschooling my daughter. She can work it out with her therapist in a few years. It’s summer and fall is-a-coming so the decision has been made.

Because I am exactly like that perfectly organized, behavior-chart-keeping, dirt-digging-for-science-class, (cough @papapepper) homeschooling mom that you're conjuring up in your cute little head.

Except the complete opposite.

I work outside of the home. I’m not a scholar. I watch TV. I play hooky from church occasionally, and so much more.

Basically I’m a hot mess.

So my brown-eyed beauty entering the first year of her magical high school years is in for it. Because, what in the blazes do I know? It was so much easier when she was four years old. I can teach shape recognition like a beast.

But it’s likely to get a little dicey in 9th grade. It’s not for the faint of heart for sure. And it’s out there now.

And aside from the responses from those who clutch their gut and die laughing when I tell them my decision, there are those who say, “I can never do that. I’m not fill in the blank with whatever enough.

Well neither am I.

Still, I am willingly taking the academic bull by the horns in the hopes of instilling things of much more value into her tender heart. Because I only have a few more years to prepare her for literally everything the world will chuck at her, and there is so much more that I still want her to know.

• Life is hard. In the times it is not, rest up, because it won’t last.
• You are beautiful no matter what demands this crazy world tries to put on you.
• There is power in being a lady. Carry yourself like one.
• Don’t quit until tomorrow.
• Algebra can be fun. Geometry can’t.
• A test will NEVER determine your value.
• Learn to express YOURSELF well. You are unique and the world needs you.
• Don’t give any boyfriend husband privileges.
• There is life beyond a classroom.
• Good friends are more precious than gold.
• This home will always be your safe place to fall.
• When you fully grasp what Jesus did for you, it will wreck you. And it will be magnificent.

It's not that I CAN'T teach her these things while she's in public school, it's just that the opposing messages often drown these out. Soon enough she will face them, and I want her to be strong and fierce when she fights that battle.

So to my youngest child, I love you tons. Give me these next few years to help you carve your path. You are the last to fly out of my nest, and I can’t wait to watch.

Lol, you go mom!

This is a precious article. You're right, the messages that our young adults hear at school often drown out the truth we wish for them to hear from us.

May your message and Christ's truly shine through to your daughter this school year.

Thanks @lydon.sipe! We are taking the leap and trying to keep our sense of humor through it all.

You have a great start!

A test will NEVER determine your value.

I wish my teachers would have taught me that. I was good at school and the most valuable things I learned there was to make friends.
