Malapascua Island is a beautiful tropical island with large stretches of white sand beaches, coconut trees, and crystal clear water. It is well-known in the Philippines and around the world for being one of the few spots on Earth where the extremely rare Thresher Shark can be seen! There's also a Manta Ray season, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to see these gentle giants!
Where should I stay?
I frequently use Airbnb to reserve hotels on Malapascua Island in advance because they usually have the best prices. I enjoy it since I can cancel and modify the dates at any time.
Malapascua has a number of diving destinations. The majority of them have excellent beach bungalows with fans or air conditioning. Backpackers and budget travelers will like the simple lodgings. During the Christmas season, it is best to book far ahead of time. The cost of living in this area is often higher than in other parts of the Philippines.
Malapascua Island activities and trips
If you aren't diving, Malapascua is a small island with few activities. With a refreshing drink in hand, the main activity is to relax and enjoy the gorgeous, unspoiled beaches. There are various restaurants and small pubs open late at night, ideal for sharing a cold beer with other divers.
Tourist Season is the best time to visit Malapascua Island.
During the high season, which runs from December to April, make sure you book ahead of time. The island can get extremely busy, especially around Christmas, and as a result, prices tend to rise.
The low season lasts from July to the beginning of December. It can be quite rainy around this time, although diving is usually not affected.
The hottest months are March, April, and May (average 32°C), whereas the "coldest" months are December to February (average 28°C).

Safety and Health
If you are planning a dive trip or a trip to Malapascua Island, it is a smart idea to invest in scuba diving travel insurance because you never know what could happen or when you might need it (accidents do happen!). This diving insurance is recommended since it provides worldwide coverage and focuses on providing scuba divers with high-quality insurance and medical help.
What is the location of Malapascua Island in the world?
Malapascua Island is located 8 kilometers north of Cebu Island and 200 kilometers north of Cebu City in the Philippines. It is a little island, roughly 1km wide, with a population of 4000 people.
What is the best way to get to Malapascua Island?
To go to Malapascua Island, you must take numerous steps.
Step 1: Fly from Manila to Cebu City (Cebu Pacific air for example). On the Philippine dedicated website, you can get more information on how to get to Manila.
Step 2: From Cebu City, take the bus to Maya Port. It costs roughly P160 and takes around 4 hours (200km) to complete, including a beautiful drive down the coast. Another alternative is to take a taxi, which is more expensive but faster.
Step 3: From Maya Port, take the banca-ferry to Malapascua (30 min, P50).
Step 4: Relax and enjoy your vacation!
If you've booked a guided diving tour, your guide will meet you at Cebu Airport or Maya Port.
Hot Tip:
Try to arrive early in the day in Cebu city and before 4:30 pm in Maya Port or you will have to stay overnight to take the boat the next day to Malapascua.
