A Big Drawback of My Dark Vanessa

Do you visualize the characters of a fiction book when reading it? I do. When I started to read My Dark Vanessa, I was curious to know that the main protagonist had red hair and wore a dress that was a bit out of fashion. But then…

The author did not bother to portrait this character! I had no clue of her eyes, chin, nose, fingers, knees… I could not imagine her! She was no more than a cloud, some kind of fog for me!

On the back cover of the book, I saw the photo of Kate Elizabeth Russell, the author. This face “stuck” to the image of Vanessa. But… Kate in her 30s does not look like a teen at all!

I could clearly "add" this face to Vanessa when she was already a grown-up. But why did the author deprive us of a detailed description of the teen girl? It feels weird to explore someone's mind and soul that profoundly without being able to glance at the surface...
