The News

Happy Friday! There are only a couple more of those this year and as things get busy I may not be able to do these posts over the festive season. I do get some nice comments saying people appreciate the updates, but I do this partly for my own interest. I am burning some of the rewards this time as well as distributing some via @commentrewarder.

Prices from @coingecko

$HIVE is hanging on just above 10c, but I think the legacy chain coin is likely to fall further. When I looked recently their site was down and I think they only have one front end. Not that I really care too much about it.

The Hive ecosystem is generally healthy with lots of options for accessing it. We also have a good range of games. I only play @risingstargame these days, but I know others are more into gaming.

We have had a chat function in Peakd for some time, but it may be under-used. I use the @ecency mobile app and noticed that it also does chat now. It works pretty well and it is useful as an alternative to using Discord. From what I can see it does not use the same channel as Peakd so it relies on people using the same app. I believe the chat makes use of our keys for encryption, but messages are not stored on the blockchain. Please let me know if I have that wrong.

I also use the @snapie app and it looks like @meno will be implementing the Ecency chat too. To progress on the Google Store they need testers to run the app.

Meanwhile in Meatspace

I went to Krakow in Poland a few years back for our Fest. Since then a great community has formed there around a venue called The Kingdom as posted by @hallmann. The community has its own account as @krolestwo. We need more like this around the world. People could have regular meetings at a bar or cafe. If there are enough then the venue could be persuaded to accept $HBD.

Friday Follows

  • I posted about the Tokenize:LDN event last week, but @alessandrawhite has done a more comprehensive post. She did a great job speaking about Hive and made some good connections. @mcsamm and @adetorrent also posted about it.
  • Talking of Rising Star, @nupulse posted about the special Christmas cards and missions. There are other seasonal missions through the year to keep it interesting. Some of us like to get all the unique cards. Also check out his music under the name Billy Korg.
  • I literally just heard about Hash Score from @pinkfloyd878 that is a game which can use Rising Star tokens. I do not know too much about the game, so check the posts.
  • I have not ridden a skateboard in a long time, but @skatehive has an active community with their own site. Now you can use their iOS app.

The Dog House

I have heard lately of some people gaining hundreds of new followers. That might seem like a good thing, but not if they are accounts being created to scam Hive. I have not had that yet, but I do see some in Snaps posting generic text and not engaging. The rewards may be small per account, but it may add up. These accounts may be created via InLeo that can do it for free. That does require a Twtr/X account or a phone number, so that ought to limit what people can do, but perhaps there are ways around that. I do not know how people are mass-creating accounts.

InLeo signup

A Hive account has potential value, so ought to have a cost. If you have enough HP then you can claim Account Creation Tokens that let you generate accounts for others and I have done this. The projects may be doing the same. Some methods require a payment that can be in cryptocurrency.

Part of the value of a Hive account is in the unique name. I know that many have been created with the names of celebrities and brands as there is nothing to stop that. There needs to be some sort of cost to creating an account to prevent abuse so we have to find some sort of balance to make real growth possible.

The End

It has been quite a year for Hive, but it still has not gone mainstream. There can be many reasons for that, but it is still fun for many of us. I am sure others are disillusioned with corporate social media that is full of ads and junk so people need to know that there is an alternative. Each of us can play a part in that.

I haven't seen those accounts yet either. I guess it's a good thing, but it still is annoying that people try to abuse the system like that.

We know that people will abuse online systems in any way they could so we have to look at ways to minimise it.

Mmh, I do feel that Hive is in a bad position. Technically it is great and good enough to attract dapps but for some reason that doesn’t happen.
Also if we have a look at the value Hive is down 69.1% compared to a year ago.
So I do think that it could sink further. Let’s hope 2026 has some great news for Hive. But to be honest no idea what that could be!

Financially it is not great and the lack of new users is troubling, but as I have said, many people use it happily every day. I am no marketing expert, but we need something to give it a boost.

Hivers in common just dump too much of their earnings on the market. They are entitled to do that, but they are destructive their hive income this way.
What is the English phrase: they biting in the hand that feeds them.

While that is not the only cause if the steep downfall, it is just one of the many reasons.

If you are on a site that pays people then you should not be surprised if some actually use that income. I know many really need it, but I am fortunate not to. I see other advantages to Hive, but I may well spend more if and when the price goes up.

Some people think blogging is so 1990's. Not for me . I like it. untitled.gif

Me too. We have short form and video too for the 'cool kids'. I think Hive should be for everyone.

Thanks for another great post @steevc ! I hope Moonshot gets some good holiday gigs! 🥁

We are playing this weekend for fun. Have a good one.

!BEER

Hey @bitterirony, here is a little bit of BEER from @steevc for you. Enjoy it!

Did you know that <a href='https://dcity.io/cityyou can use BEER at dCity game to buy cards to rule the world.

If Hive is going back up and gains popularity, the unique name thing must be resolved because if a big bunch of new users are trying to create their account but have difficulty on choosing a name because someone inactive already took it years ago, or worse because of bots taking every name possible, that's a problem.

At that point someone must take responsibility for deleting accounts

Deleting accounts is not so simple as it would require changes to the blockchain logic. That is why ownership is so valuable.

I'll say “Happy Holidays” in advance.
As we approach a new year for Hivers, we must stick together.

Yeah people creating hundreds or thousands of accounts just to scam are super annoying... But you can't do much really, it's decentralizated so no bans and also you can't make all accounts not free or how can you onboard people?

There can be some sort of cost to accounts. Needing an account on another platform offloads some checking to them.
