Bangladesh has reiterated its full and firm commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons. Rabab Fatima, the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, made the pledge in a speech at a function organized by several UN member states on January 22. The event was organized to celebrate the historic moment of the implementation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

On October 24, 2020, Honduras became the 50th ratification of the treaty with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. 90 days later, the agreement came into force on January 22.

The virtual event is held simultaneously in New York, USA, Geneva, Switzerland and Vienna, Austria. Bangladesh has also joined other countries in this. On the occasion, Bangladesh Ambassador to the United Nations Rabab Fatima quoted the call of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the General Assembly in 1974 to free the world from the horrors of nuclear war.
