You're not wrong, however, I think there are some opportunities to change things. It'll be slow at first, but I think it really hinges on cultivating deeper connections within communities and not relying on "you can get paid to blog!" as the primary means of drawing people to Hive.

"you can get paid to blog!" conflicts with "except you can't till you have some funds" and that's the point I just made to nonameslefttouse elsewhere in comments herein. I don't have a problem at all with pay to play, it was that way when steem first began, you had to pay to make an account. But it was clear at the front door back then too.
Ah, see I wasn't around for Steem, but having that disclaimer at the beginning would certainly be an improvement.
It was pointed out to me that it's buried in the FAQ on at least one interface to the chain (PeakD). And naturally everyone reads the questions they never knew they even had when jumping on one of the millions of social media tools they sign up for. Right guys? Guys?
