She was waiting. Silent. The look on her face was telling a different story, though. Her interview had gone well. The reply from the company should have come earlier but a week had gone by and each passing day ended in disappointment. Her parents too could feel her tension. They wanted the best for their daughter. They tried pacifying her but that seemed to disturb her more. So, they decided to keep quiet and tried to distract her. Let us wait a week more, they said and she sighed.

The water was over. There was not a drop left in the water tank. Living in a village had its advantages but when a tree fell on the power line and dragged down the electric post, it meant disaster. The power would not be restored before a week passed, and it meant that the water would be over soon. It was then that the rains poured. She collected rainwater in all possible pots and pans. It was not clear but at least she could strain it and use it for cooking and cleaning. She need not walk two miles to the lake to collect the water, now.

The red shoes seemed to be so attractive. The small girl looked at her classmate's feet and she had a desire to own such a pair. She was five years old and she did not know if her parents could afford it or not. After school, she went home and told her parents that she wanted a pair of red shoes to wear to school the next day. Her parents doted on her and her dad took her to a shoe shop in the city. She was all excited and ran inside and searched on her own. Her dad was speaking to the shop owner and she came next to him and showed him her feet. She was wearing high heeled red chappals. It was so pretty and she was beaming. Her dad burst out in laughter and all the staff joined in. They were so surprised and happy that such a small girl was able to locate the red chappals and also wear them without any assistance.
