In 2025, which is about to get over, every one of us is dependent on our smartphones because that is how we use our SIM cards to make and receive calls.
The sad thing about the majority of telecom operators in my country is that they have some very bad rules for SIM card users.
One of the top players, Airtel, which is not only known in India but also outside India, has a rule that says if your SIM card is inactive for 90 days.
Meaning f you do not make or receive any calls for 90 days, then the SIM gets deactivated and can be recycled.
This means a third person can actually get your number, which is not a good thing.
There is a grace period, according to some reports, which can help you extend the time period by 15 days, but I do not think that is much.
So, if you are someone who is using a SIM card and you have not recharged for more than 90 days or are close to it, then you might lose control of your SIM card.
The bad thing about this rule is that when we buy a SIM card, we provide our Aadhaar card to get it.
This means we should actually own that number for the rest of our life, whether we want to use it actively or not.
Sometimes you give your number to a bank account or some important services and later you may not want to use that SIM regularly, but you still need to keep it active because it is linked to important things. If the SIM gets recycled, it can become a serious problem for many people.
The second thing I do not like about Airtel’s services is that after your recharge plan ends, incoming calls get deactivated within the next 24 hours.
OTP messages also stop, which means you are forced to recharge the very next day after your plan expires. I really dislike this policy.
In Jio, the good thing is that incoming calls and OTPs are not stopped immediately, and you can receive them even if your plan has expired.
You can recharge whenever you want. For a big player like Airtel, I think they should change this rule.
At the very least, they should extend the number of days, and incoming calls should not be discontinued just 24 hours after the plan ends.
I believe incoming calls should continue, or there should be a system where if a person has some balance in their SIM card, they should be able to receive incoming calls.
But currently, this is not the case. If you do not have an active unlimited plan, you will not be able to receive incoming calls, which is a very bad thing.
So, if you are from India and have never paid attention to the rules set by your SIM card operator, then maybe you should go and read them carefully so that you do not regret it later in life.
