The One App I Spend Too Much Time On and How It Shapes My Daily Life

in Indiaunited24 days ago

If I’m being very honest with myself, the application I spend most of my time on, both on my phone and laptop, is social media, especially WhatsApp and YouTube. Sometimes I don’t even plan to spend that much time there, but once I open it, time just fly like bird. One minute I’m checking a message, next thing one hour don pass. It’s funny and scary at the same time.

I think the reason I spend so much time on these apps is because they make me feel connected. In Nigeria and even in India, family and friends are very important, but life has scattered everybody. Some people travel for work, some for school, some just hustle in another city. So WhatsApp becomes like a small meeting ground. Family group chat, friends group, old classmates… everybody dey there. You don’t want to miss gist, so you keep checking.

YouTube on the other hand is like my free teacher and free cinema. I watch videos to learn new things, sometimes about tech, sometimes motivational talk, sometimes just comedy to relax my brain. In India, many youths also use YouTube to learn skills or watch entertainment, same way Nigerians do. It feels productive at first, but sometimes it turns to too much watching without doing anything.

This habit affects my daily life in both good and bad ways. On the good side, I learn a lot. I stay informed, I laugh, I feel less lonely. I also get inspired when I see people doing better or sharing useful ideas. But on the bad side, it steals time. There are days I plan to read or rest well, but scrolling takes over. My eyes get tired, my sleep pattern scatter, and sometimes my mind feels full but empty at the same time.

My parents used to warn me, even when I was younger, that too much of anything is bad. At that time, phone was not even popular like now. But their advice still makes sense. Technology is good, but if you don’t control it, it will control you. I try sometimes to reduce my screen time, but I’m still learning. Some days I do well, some days I fail.

At the end of the day, these apps are not evil. They are tools. It’s how we use them that matters. I’m still trying to find balance, because life is happening offline too, and I don’t want to miss it while staring at my screen.

This is so true... exactly what happens to a lot of us. We plan on spending few minutes but went on being on for hours 🧐.

It's all about balance just like you said.

Thanks for sharing.
