Those little moments

It's crazy how little moments can turn out to be something much bigger than we ever expected. Love is a complex word they say, but what better way is there to express it than extending a lending hand. Giving is one of the greatest form of love and it's something I didn't read in elaborated fairy tales, it's something I experienced!

About 3 years back, I was walking by within campus. I went into a restaurant where I could get some food into the grumbling walls of my stomach.

A finger poked both sides of my groin. I shuddered, turning backwards to get a glimpse of who it was — it was none other than Nonso, my friend and college classmate.

"Bro what's up? That was really unexpected." I said to him as my face transitioned into a smile of relief.

"You came to eat?" I asked.

"Not really, I just came around, strolling." He indecisively replied.

Who the hell strolls in a restaurant - I thought to myself. I was standing at the queue just behind the counter where the food was being sold.

"Wait, are you heading back to the hostel?" I asked him, hoping he would say yes.

"Yeah, why do you ask?" He curiously replied.

"Nothing much."

"What do you want?" The waitress furiously asked banging her clenched fists on the counter as she attempted drawing my attention away from Nonso who I was actively interacting with.

"Oh! I - i'm Sorry. Please give me a plate of rice and a bottle of drink. Make it two plates please."

I turned sideways to Nonso who stood right beside me, away from the queue. "Let's have a seat" I said to him gently heading towards the eatery's table, balancing the long tray of food on my trembling hands. We sat down and I pushed one of the plates towards him.

"I bought two plates so we could both eat."

There was a short momentary silence. It was the silence of disbelief. He rejected at first but I persuaded him. I could sense the happiness in his eyes; I could see the joy on his face. We both laughed, ate and drank until we were satisfied.

Well, I thought things were going to end there, but no, it didn't! I never knew Nonso kept that little moment encrypted in that fragile memory of his. About a year later, things became increasingly difficult for me in School. I faced a downward slope in my finances. Eating became a tug of war for me. I was literally sad, depressed, angry and of course... hungry! But guess what?

Nonso came through for me in a way I expected. He borrowed me a large amount of cash, an amount that would be considered as 'excess' for a college student.

Funny enough, I didn't ask him, he perceived I was going through a whole lot and walked up to me to ask what was wrong. I explained things to him and he relentlessly assisted me in a way I didn't expect. What made things actually crazy was when he asked me to forfeit the payment, I couldn't believe it.

He came through for me at my darkest moment, something I didn't expect. Perhaps I did the same for him that certain day at the restaurant, who knows? But one thing is for sure...

"What goes around, comes back around!"
