Lovely cat

One of the things we have really liked here in Brazil is how, in general, animals are cared for. Not only the pets people have at home — where it’s common to see houses with four or five puppies or several cats — but also the animals that live on the streets.

Usually, even these street animals receive some kind of care. People value them a lot, and in fact, there are organizations that work specifically to protect them. However, in recent weeks I learned that, because there are so many animals living in this situation, some people simply choose to neuter them, especially the males, who move around more easily, although they also do it with females.

Without a doubt, this helps a lot to prevent the overpopulation of animals on the streets. Even so, many continue living without a home. What really caught my attention is that some of these little animals are very well cared for by the neighbors, even if it’s just by leaving food on a porch or on the sidewalk.

In fact, this little cat we saw didn’t seem to have an owner. However, it looked very well cared for: its fur, its eyes, and its overall appearance showed that someone was paying attention to it. It wasn’t easy to know whether it was a street cat or if it actually lived in someone’s house, because cats — just like dogs — usually stay near the place where they live. But this little cat, even though it was on the street, was truly very well taken care of.

I think this is one of the most beautiful things that stands out here, at least in the region where we are, in Rio Grande do Sul. There are even animal protection laws, which is very positive. And this doesn’t happen only with the cat we found, but with many, many cats and quite a few dogs.

Some of them even have their own little houses outside people’s homes, as if the owners were saying: “They don’t live here because we already have many animals, but we still want to give them a place.” During the past winter, many people left blankets to keep them warm. And in the summer, they usually place containers with water and a bit of food to help them.

It is truly wonderful to see this genuine care for the animals.
