Before moving to a farm, I never realized there are specialized breeds of dogs for protecting livestock. They are called livestock guardian dogs or LGD’s. My currently pup, Kintla, is a Karelian Bear Dog which is a working breed, but she isn’t necessarily a livestock guardian dog. She would most likely be eating the livestock or chasing it off than guarding it. I’m sure this could change with proper training and raising her since a puppy around livestock, but that is not the case. She grew up with me in an urban setting with leashed walks and fenced yards—no cows in sight.
The most popular livestock guardian dog is a Great Pyrenees. These dogs have it in their genetics to guard whatever livestock is put before them—goats, cows, chickens, geese, etc. My neighbor has a giant flock of a variety of birds and recently purchased two Great Pyrenees puppies who are growing up with the flock. When I drive by, I see the puppies outside amongst the flock as if they are birds themselves leaning up against each other protecting the flock and learning as they grow.
Working breeds are not meant for urban environments. The only reason I made it work with my girl Kintla is because I am an avid hiker. Even in the winters, her and I were hitting up strenuous trails so she was able to work her mind and body. If I had just sat around all day and hoped she would be a good backyard dog, I would be doing her and me a disservice. I cannot stand people who don’t research a particular breed before making the commitment. Working dogs need to work. Kinta’s job on the farm is to clear all of the fields of mice and protect the perimeter. I don’t have any livestock, yet, but maybe I will consider adding a Great Pyrenees to the pack in the future.
I love my working dog who has an active job!
10 years ago I visited a couple of villages in Turkey. On the streets there were a lot of gigantic dogs. I was even afraid of going outside the car. Later, I found in the internet that those were Kangals and Alabais. 100-200 years in the Ottoman Empire they used these dogs for protecting the sheeps from the wolves. I'd never seen such dogs in my life before. Probably, except for a Caucasian shepherd.
