Stray Kittens: A sad story we have decided to forget... [ENG/ESP]
There is a very popular PC game called ‘Stray’. It has a simple principle: ‘pretend you are a stray kitten and you are on a mission to survive the rudeness and indifference of the streets’. Although there is a saying that goes something like ‘reality sometimes surpasses fiction’, the truth is that on this occasion, to come across a delicate part of our reality as a society is, to say the least, controversial... It is necessary to deal with the issue of abandonment and the lack of seriousness with which street animals are treated; especially felines...
I have no need to put myself in a position of superiority over you or others to explain this point... The truth is that sometimes we are not sufficiently self-critical to be able to analyse a reality that continues to develop... And that is the proliferation of cats in the different streets all over the world. In some places like Istanbul or some islands in Japan, they are kept free but under a sterilisation regime. So that they can't reproduce in a disconsolate way.
Let's not forget that the balance between flora and fauna is worldwide. And yes, many stray animals, especially kittens, occupy the space and place that should belong to other species. Eliminating reptiles, birds and even insects that are necessary for the balance of the ecosystem. And no, I'm not saying that they should be eradicated or anything like that... I am just showing the reality of what is on our streets.
In most cases, these small animals are poorly fed and if for some reason they manage to overcome the harsh reality of the streets, they become a risk by reproducing without control... Making both female and male cats suffer the consequences of our irresponsibility... And this is a confession in first person that I must express to you... Yesterday, on my way home from work, I came across a small morning of beautiful, curious, kittens and kittens outside my neighbour's house (5 houses away from mine)....
They were absolutely adorable little things. Beautiful and they looked playful and mischievous.... But I was immediately struck by their origin... I had never seen them before. And just as I was taking some pictures, my neighbour was telling me that when she went out to water the plants in the garden; ‘they had left a shoebox full of kittens and an adult cat tied to the fence’ Can you believe it? Human cruelty and its worst equivalent, irresponsibility, know no bounds.... Luckily, my neighbour is a kind-hearted woman and is taking care of the cats.
However, the essential question that originated this post remains, how much do we care about the animals on the street; as a society, I mean? I am convinced that once we acquire a pet, we are efficient and responsible with them; but what about the hundreds if not thousands of kittens and puppies on the street? Will the cycle of irresponsibility and insensitivity towards these noble and innocent animals continue to perpetuate? I do not pretend to offer an answer; it is not my duty.... But we are not playing ‘Stray’, this is the real world, where things have consequences.... Maybe it's time to take some responsibility.
Hay un juego de PC muy popular que se llama "Stray". Consta de un principio sencillo: "simular que eres un gatito callejer y que tienes la misión de sobrevivir la rudeza y la indiferencia de las calles". Si bien, hay un dicho que reza algo así cómo "la realidad, a veces, supera a la ficción"; lo cierto es que en esta ocasión toparme con una delicada parte de nuestra realidad como sociedad es, es como mínimo, polémico... Hay que trata el tema sobre el abandono y la poca seriedad con la que se trata a los animales de calle; especialmente a los felinos...
No hace falta colocarme en una posición mora superior a la de ustedes o a las de los demás para explicar este punto... Lo cierto, es que en ocasiones no somos lo suficientemente autocríticos como para poder analizar una realidad que sigue desarrollándose... Y es la proliferación de gatos en las diferentes calles de todo el mundo. En algunos lugares como Estambul o algunas islas de Japón, los mantienen de manera libre per bajo un régimen de esterilización. De modo que no puedan reproducirse desconsoladamente.
No olvidemos, que el equilibrio entre flora y fauna es a nivel mundial. Y sí, muchos animales callejeros, en especial los gatitos, ocupan el espacio y el lugar que le correspondería a otras especies. Eliminando reptiles, aves y hasta insectos que son necesarios para el equilibrio del ecosistema. Y no, no estoy diciendo que haya que erradicarlos ni nada por el estilo... Solo me limito a mostrar una realidad sobre lo que hay en nuestras calles.
Pequeños animalitos, en la inmensa mayoría de las veces, mal alimentados y que si por alguna razón, logran sobreponerse con la inclemente realidad de las calles, se vuelven un riesgo al reproducirse sin control... Haciendo que tanto las hembras, como los machos de los gatos sufran las consecuencias de nuestra irresponsabilidad... Y esto es una confesión en primera persona que debo expresarle... Ayer, al regresar del trabajo, me topé con una pequeña mañana de gatitos preciosos, curiosos y cachorros fuera de la casa de mi vecina (a 5 casas de la mía)...
Eran unas cositas totalmente adorables. Bellos y se veían juguetones y traviesos... Pero de inmediato me sorprendió su origen... Jamás los había visto ali anteriormente. Y justo mientras tomaba algunas fotos, mi vecina me decía que cuando ella salió a regar las plantas del jardín; "habían dejado una caja de zapatos repleta de gatitos y a una gata adulta amarrada a la reja" ¿Pueden creerlo? La crueldad humana y su peor equivalente; la irresponsabilidad, no conocen límite alguno... Por suerte, mi vecina es una mujer de buen corazón y se está encargando de los gatos.
Sin embargo, la pregunta esencial que originó este post se mantiene, ¿qué tanto nos importan los animales de la calle; como sociedad, me refiero? Estoy convencida, que una vez que adquirimos una mascota, somos eficientes y responsables con ellos; pero y qué sucede con los cientos sino miles de gatitos y perritos de la calle? ¿Se seguirá perpetuando el ciclo de irresponsabilidad e insensibilidad para con estos animales tan nobles e inocentes? No pretendo ofrecer una respuesta; no es mi obligación... Pero no estamos jugando "Stray", ésto es el mundo real, donde las cosas tienen consecuencias... Quizá sea tiempo de asumir algunas responsabilidades.
