STEMng Digest: Africa needs to be stopped being babied

in StemSociallast year
Authored by @gentleshaid

I have watched, with keen interests, as events unfold in West Africa, and cannot help but make a few comments. For those that don't already know, a military coup was executed against the democratically elected president of Niger, the next-door neighbour of African Giant, Nigeria.

For an issue that should have a simple solution, the big brothers of the world seem to be making it a complex one. Ordinarily, a simple drilling exercise of the Nigerian military should easily scare the Junta in Niger away and force him to restore democracy. However, it seems interference and the promise of soldiers and weapons from some powers to be is giving the coupists some guts.

This, in turn, has made some other big brothers of the world to be backing ECOWAS and Nigeria against military action in Niger. In other words, the big brothers of the world are ready to supervise while Africans slain each other in the name of trying to restore democracy.

The question is, to what end? Is this just about democracy? I know you have an idea of the answer as much as I do.

Welcome to a new edition of STEMng Digest.

Who are we?

STEMng is the Nigerian sub-community of the stemsocial community, a community that has been supporting stem authors on the hive blockchain for about four years now. While stemsocial focuses on everyone irrespective of their country, STEMng is specifically for Nigerians. The best stem contents published by Nigerians on the Hive blockchain are highlighted weekly.

Below are the posts that made it into our digest for this week:

  1. Why is it so darn difficult to swat a fly??!!!
I don't know about you, but flies piss me off so bad. Especially the ones of considerable size which produce the annoying buzzy sound. More annoying is the fact that you have to be at your genius best before you could swat them. Ever wonder why this is so? Our opening post for this week provides all the info that we may need. Have a feast.@sam9999:

Time Constraints Racing Against Hypoxia and Ischemia in Organ Transplants
My feed on Twitter (now X) is filled with financial assistance posts relating to organ failure/transplants. While this may also be the case for several other users, I can bet only a few people knows the nitty-gritties of what it takes to transplant organs - especially the challenges of keeping the organ alive enough to meet up with the transplant. Here is a good post that educates in that regards. AN enjoyable read, I must admit.2.@ireti:

How did the tennis sport come about? Let's touch History!!
History as a subject in Nigeria is now a history, but that won't stop us from reading or writing about history. In this post, the writer informed us about how one of the world's most popular sports, the tennis, comes about. Not sure the highest Grand slam holders even knows this one. Can anyone tag him here? Hive could benefit him!3.@jsalvage:

What Kind Of Relationship Do You Have With Your Physician?
"I've got my Physician on dial." Yea, you can boast about that. But have you ever dial his number to check up on him? Take a back seat and think. Doctors are humans as well and are not immune from the everyday diseases that are treated at the hospital. Inspired by his latest indisposition, our community Optometrist decided to write on patients-Physician relationship today.4.@nattybongo:

A Real-time Case of Cannibalism in a Domestic Dog.
Dogs are favoritely called 'man's best friend' for a reason. They can be so cute and helpful in several cases. However, if you walk in on your German shepherd devouring your Corgi, you will think it is scene in a movie. What could cause this? Read our last post for this week to find out more on dog-dog cannibalism.5.@futurekr:
