Chikungunya, the Breakbone Fever.
Yes, believe it or not, that name is real. If you've never heard of this virus, you can consider yourself lucky because it means it's not common in your country.
Where I live (Cuba), several types of mosquito-borne tropical diseases, such as dengue, Zika, oropouche, and chikungunya, have been circulating for years.
For many months now, the latter has been completely uncontrolled, and a large part of the population is or has already been infected.
It is native to Africa and Asia but currently exists in several tropical regions. Its name means "to bend over in pain."
The disease is transmitted by infected mosquitoes of the Aedes genus (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus). After infection, the patient begins to show symptoms 3 to 7 days after infection, although this can vary in some cases.
The onset of symptoms is usually sudden, with a very high fever that generally does not subside for many hours after taking medication. A characteristic of this virus in most cases is intense and debilitating joint pain that often leaves the patient bedridden for the first few days. Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, groin, and armpits may also be present, along with loss of appetite, taste disturbance, rash, and eye pain.
There is no cure for this virus once it has taken hold; only vaccines containing parts of the virus that offer some protection. Once infection occurs, the recommended course of action is to rest, stay well-hydrated, and eat a balanced diet. Symptomatic treatment for fever includes acetaminophen, and anticoagulants such as aspirin should be avoided.
Reinfection cases are extremely rare because chikungunya confers strong, lifelong immunity.

In most cases, it usually resolves without major complications, only causing death in very weakened patients or those with several untreated underlying conditions. The most devastating aspect of this virus is the joint damage it leaves in a large proportion of its victims. Post-infection joint pain often leaves patients with arthritis that can last for months or, in some cases, years. Chronic and debilitating pain for months. The virus is gone, but the pain remains.
If you ever visit an area with a risk of contracting this or any other arbovirus, take precautions because they are no fun.
