While visiting Dubai and the district of Deira (old Dubai) we couldn’t miss the visit of the souks (a souk is an Arab market). We decide to take a walk through the spice souk and the gold souk.
Both of them are very attractive, and the spice souk is a colourful and aromatic experience. While the gold souk is definitely an eye-catching experience and for us it is only a window shopping experience 😊.
For me, the spice souk was more attractive, maybe because of all the colours and aromas, or maybe because the vendors were very talkative and wanted to show us all their products.
The colourful spices, nicely distributed in the form of a cone, were really attractive and I couldn’t resist. We stopped at a few stands, smelled the spices and herbs, talked with vendors, took some pictures, and of course, bought some of them. A little bit of curry, some dried lemons and menthol crystals. We had never sown or tried them before, so we were immediately attracted by the strong menthol aroma.
The souk itself is very lively, with both locals and tourists. Beside spices and herbs, they are also offering other things (souvenirs) like pashminas, dresses, ceramics, etc. (honestly, I got the impression that this souk is mostly for tourists). The spices and herbs that are positioned in baskets of all sizes are sold by weight, but of course there are also pre-packed options.
It is really nice to wander among many different stalls, and when you are ready to buy something, it is also very nice to talk with the vendors. They give you detailed information about the species and advise you on how to use them, in which combinations, and with which ingredients. There are a lot of Arabic spices on offer, as well as many from the subcontinent. Of course, there are also a wide variety of teas from all over the world.
For my son, it was the first time to visit an Arab market, and he was "the right catch" for all vendors. He was stopping at every stand, and he was attracted by each vendor, so we had to be quite inventive to nicely reject all their attempts; otherwise, we could buy half of the things that were present on the souk 😊.
The golden souk is quite different from the spice souk. No more stalls, but all shops, and it looks more like a shopping area and not a market place.
I think that is the first time that I’ve seen so many diverse things made out of gold. Different pieces of jewellery, but also dresses 😊 I doubt they are comfortable, but for sure, with that kind ofdress,s you don’t go unnoticed.
We walked along the gold souk and just admired all the gold from the windows. We spotted the biggest ring I’ve ever seen. Luckily, my wife is not a fan of gold (she prefers other materials), so I haven’t spent much on the gold souk…😊 Just kidding, but as I understood, the prices of the gold on the souk are quite reasonable, and if you like it, it is worth stopping by and check it out.
At the end of our walk and in between all that gold, we found a real gem, that was an ice-cream made of dates and camel milk. It was so delicious and a perfect refreshment in the hot Dubai morning.
After a morning at the souk, we jumped back on the abra boat to reach the nearest metro station, and we travelled back to Dubai Down Town since an afternoon experience was awaiting us.
Until next time!

Oh wow! Imagine all the wonderful food that can be made with those spices! And the aromas! I could pay just to be allowed to sit nearby and inhale them all day 💜😋 We have a couple of good spice shops here in Stockholm, where they sell by weight instead of ready-packaged, but they keep everything in tightly closed containers, so you don't really feel that you are surrounded by flavours and aromas from all over the world when you enter.
I agree with you, I would also buy everything and take it home so I could cook all day 😀 We don't have such shops here, but fortunately we have fairs a few times a year where they sell spices by weight. Worst case scenario, I order online. But the best option is that when I run out of spices, I know it's time to start a new journey 🙃
Exploring the souks in Dubai, especially the spice souk and gold souk, is an absolute must for any visitor. The vibrant atmosphere and rich cultural experience make it a memorable adventure. Did you come across any unique spices during your visit?
Not really spices, we bought some dried lemons and menthol crystals because they are hard to get here. We left the jewellery for the next visit 😁

Awesome!!! Really great pictures , I got crazy with all of those colors!! 😂
Thanks bro! The colours of the spices were really distinctive, and they were inviting to buy. But what I find most interesting is that these are natural colours, without artificial colours, really enchanting. But the colour of the gold is another story 🙃🤣
😂😂😂
These are really amazing shots!

It's been a great trip, but I'm focused on the spice market. They sell all kinds of spices in the open and that's cool!
Yes, it's really great, it looks nice and smells even nicer. You can really find any spice you want. As there is no such choice here, so some shopping was a must 😁

I'm not typically drawn to gold, but the gold souk made me want to buy some. All of the photographs are fantastic)
Thank you! Believe me, you are not the only one with these thoughts 🙃 See you around!
I loved reading about your visit to the souks in Dubai! The spice souk with its vibrant colors and aromas was a delightful experience, while the gold souk showcased a stunning array of jewelry. Also this place reminded me Türkiye Grand Bazaar, especially about spicies. Your son's excitement and the refreshing ice cream made of dates and camel milk added to the charm of your trip. Thanks for sharing your adventures!
Also I highly recommend you to visit Grand Bazaar one day if you can
My pleasure! I will definitely remember your advice when the road takes me to Istanbul. Hopefully soon 😉
Why does even the markets in Dubai look crazy beautiful- like that's some next level economy 🥲🥲 I'd love to visit that one day
Everything in Dubai really looks great and it is. These souk were really exceptional. When you are there and you see all the colours and you can smell the spices in the air, it is really stunning. When you get a chance, take it and visit Dubai.
I love those mountains of spices, and colours too! I hope those tables are strong, imaging what would happen if that all just collapsed upon itself 😮
Ha ha, we were wondering the same thing ourselves 😀Given the number of visitors, I believe they have enough experience to make sure that this doesn't happen to them. Thanks for dropping by!
I bet they indeed do!
In my head it looked a bit like holi festival - all those colours in the air :D
The souks are an absolute must, but, I think you are right about that particular one. It does seem like a tourist one, that is the largest percentage of people that are wandering about. It doesn't matter though. Just look at those spices being offered up! What a colorful display to look at and photograph. Which spice did you buy? I couldn't resist. There is just something addictive to perusing the spice markets.
I can go back again and again... ditto the gold... or especially the gold. The gold dresses! Even though I would think it has to be uncomfortable to wear, you still want to look at them, yes? I might even want to try one on. I think I could do it. Wear one, I mean. :) That is just crazy, by the way.
You really nailed photographing the souks. I think it is a little difficult with all the people, one on top of the other, but, to be honest, the shots look great too. There are sometimes too many people! (Lies! there are always too many people~) But, isn't that half the fun? Navigating it?
Your pictures are colorful, well-framed, interesting, well composed... they were really terrific. Thank you for sharing these and the story of your visit!
#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can benefit a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.
Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday
Hello @dswigle, thank you for your compliment and comment, I really appreciate it!
When we got to the spice souk I was really a bit confused at first, I didn't know whether to look with my own eyes or through the lens 😮 There was plenty of time, so we stayed here for a while. The spices on offer were really very varied, and to be honest, I didn't know many of them. We bought some whole dried lemons, curry mixtures, tea mixtures and some menthol crystals. I still have to figure out how I'm going to use the lemons 😀
I was surprised by the gold dresses as well, it was the first time I'd seen that too. Lots of people were looking at the windows, and there was hardly anyone in the shop at the time of my visit. Maybe they are a bit uncomfortable to wear, but who cares, they are made of gold 🤑🤣
I agree about the photography, there are always too many people and cables inside the lens. And as you wrote, that's the charm, the fun and the challenge. You know, being in the right place at the right time with the camera turn on in your hand 📷
Until next time!
Whole dried lemons are usually used (whole) in soups and stews. I have used them on fish and they say you can use them on vegetables.
Experiment and have fun with it! :)
Thanks again for joining #MarketFriday!
Thank you for the hint, I'll try for sure!
It's amazing the amount of spices you've come across, I would love to go there someday and buy different spices that I've never tasted 🤩. What beautiful gold jewelry ❤️, no doubt in my country something like that would not be accessible at all. Excellent photos, so colorful and beautiful ☺️.
Thanks for your compliments! There were a lot of spices and I didn't know them all. We certainly don't have that kind of choice here and you buy them in bags. I just preferred to observe the gold through the shop window, the prices were even not listed,... strange 🙃
