I remember I and my cousin used to visit the Carbon market for lunch since it was really just across the street of the school we went to ...the USJR. We would buy the rice packed in the palm leaves and we would eat the famous chorizo or tocino of Cebu, all cooked and ready for lunch. The most that I always visited were the stores that sell handicrafts, bayong, baskets and natural fiber made boxes, etc... I was born in Banawa, Guadalupe but my parents went to Manila when I was a baby and grew up there. My Dad was assigned to build the Pink Sister Monastery in `71, I had to change school and that was how I landed at USJR for the 4th year HS. "Nagkanga kanga ko" speaking in Cebuano because I understand the dialect but it was hard to speak it. All in all, it was one of the most hilarious and really fun times I had to have experienced living there . Fond memories indeed! Thank you for sharing this market.
I'm not sure why I didn't know you were born in the Philippines!
Hi Denise...Maybe because I post most of my experiences in Europe since I live here for almost 40 years now.
Hi @mers, it's nice to know you're from Cebu! I was born and raised in Cebu but it was only in college when I went to Cebu City and that was the first time I was exposed to Carbon Market.
Puso! You can still find it in Carbon and all over Cebu these days, nothing's changed! Still the go-to especially when families go to beach outings
For this one, still the same. There's still a portion of Carbon near USJR where handicrafts are displayed.
Have you heard about the news of Carbon's renovation? They're planning to modernize the market's design. https://www.rappler.com/nation/carbon-market-cebu-city-new-look-february-2021/
Yep, I learned about the modernization from my cousins from Guadalupe. The last time I visited Cebu was in 2019. So much have changed. I think I will visit again and hopefully the modernization will go through. Thanks for the link.
